Smoker's Hill Bites the Dust - May '99

A Gunn High School landmark, no tradition, bites the dust and 
gives way to progress and development.  I was over at Gunn this
past May and saw not a hill surrounded by evergreens but a FLAT
piece of real estate covered with 14 portables (and I don't mean
Porto-Potties).  A further inspection of the campus, found
additional portables by the auditorium, the auto shop and
some of the locker areas.  All this to house a school population 
of some 1250 kids (which is about what we were in '73 with only
three grade levels).  At least the fountain in Center Quad is 
still there - no wait - that was cemented over about 10 years ago.
Is it safe to say the "Bat Cave" still exists? (Although I'm sure 
it's called something else.)  When I get a "pic" or the "hill",
I'll post it.  Ahhh, progress.
