Some Thoughts On Carlmont High's Track Team and the Coach - 1982

From 1958 to the present (1982), Carlmont's track team has won 185 meets, lost 29 and tied one. It has won 5 out of the 16 invitationals; the last 4, in fact. The one person most responsible for this enviable record is Loren Lansberry, the high school's track coach. Of course, he's shy and retiring about it. He contends that tradition is the reason, that the "kids work hard to maintain it." It's probably a combinaion of several things, but it's no accident that Loren is recognized as the most able and most successful coach in the Bay Area. He, too, is a tradition. Loren was born in Oregon, attended the University of Alaska and San Jose State College. He graduated the latter in 1950 with a B.A. degree. While in college, interestingly enough, he considered track to be the one sport he liked least to coach. He taught at Mt Shasta, California and Fairbanks, Alaska. Carlmont High hired him in 1956 as assistant track coach. He served in that capacity for one year, then became the head coach. In reminiscing about his high school days, Loren tells about his track experiences. He was a high jumper and his best height was 5-8. He laughs when he says that every high jumper on his team today can exceed that height. Well, that's Loren, a man who works hard and successfully at inspiring his athletes. He is one of the truly great teachers at Carlmont!!
