Central Section Finals Thanks to Ron Blackwood for his assistance Boys: 100m - This was a very interesting showdown of a very fine group. There were a flock in the section with or without wind under 10.70, with great competition for the three spots on to state. Josh Norman, as fast as 10.40w for Edison (Fresno) recently, eliminated himself from the big running early, falling to his hands the first stride out of the blocks, probably the victim of slipped blocks, as his lay asunder cross-ways in the starting area after the race. With 47.7 400 runner Louis Garrett (Edison) scratching there to race here, along with James Johnson (Tulare Western), who had run some great times with a .22 caliber starting pistol that locals claimed showed no smoke, and others, it was still a good race. Run into a -2.1 meter per second wind, it was Johnson and Garrett in lanes seven and eight who would battle, with Johnson vindicating himself somewhat with his 10.82- 10.92 win over Garrett. 200m - Norman (21.15w best) in lane 5, Johnson (21.60's) lane 6, and Garrett (21.27w) in lane 7 made this a fun one to watch. The Edison crew raced clean efforts here, with Johnson maintaining fine sprint form to the end in his 21.49 (wind -1.1) win, with Norman 21.77 and Garrett 21.80 next. Johnson is a stylish prancer who seems better at the 200 distance in recording the State's #3 clocking of the spring. 400m - Reginal Allen had run 47.6 to lead the section, but Gus Ezell (Roosevelt, Fresno), a survivor of many of the horrors of urban life today, emerging this year with a hardship fifth year of eligibility along with five tatoos, two earrings, and bleached hair tips, was a surprise winner. Ezell was originally entered in the second section (they run two here with qualifiers determined from three area meets), but was moved into Lane nine in the top race when Louis Garrett scratched. The tall Ezell charged out over the first 300 meters, holding on down the homestretch while Allen (lane 6) struggled back, but could not catch Ezell 47.67-47.91. Brandon Matlock improved to 48.07 in third. 800m - Ryan Smitthart, Buchanan's 1:55.59 section leader sprained an ankle in a ""non-track"" gym incident earlier in the week. After a 27.6 opening 200 behind Stockdale's David Gray, the pack really slowed down, to a 59.4 at the one lap point. Jeremiah LeRoy of Clovis took the lead through the 600 at 1:28.7, with Hanford's Michael Herring a bit charge over the final 150 meters to win at 1:56.91. 1600 M/3200 M - Fernando Cabada (4:18.5-9:14.39 bests) toyed with the fields here. Hoping someone would take it out in the 1600, which never happened, Cabada raced the final 400 under 61 seconds while unpressed to a 4:19.87 win. Cabada gained all of his 4 second winning margin in the 3200 over the final circuit there, racing a 9:30.74 winner. 110m HH - Joe Mealy continued his super spring, racing 14.47 (wind -1.3) to win with a strong move over the final two flights. 300m IH - Mealy's plans on a big hurdle double came to an end when he crashed over the seventh barrier while leading and went down big-time, watching Jordan Lewis race away to an area-leading 38.56 win. 400 Meter Relay - Edison (Fresno) and Clovis West (Fresno) had extra motivation here, as the two ended up 1-2 in the evening long team contest. Edison, lane 6, charged into the anchor leg with a good lead, with CW's Dante Washington closing down, but not quite catching Josh Norman 41.35-41.41, very fine running! 1600 Meter Relay - With the Edison/Clovis West team contest hanging on, the relay teams stepped to the line. The Long Jump was still going on, so anything was possible. Edison showed remarkable consistency, splitting 49.4-49.7-50.1- 49.6 for a 3:18.90 time, with Clovis West closing with 48.8 in their 3:19.27 runner-up effort. High Jump - During an interesting high school career that has had him jump as high as 7-02, transfer from Selma to Parlier this season, go from eligible to ineligible to eligible again, Gabe Zarate has never made it to the state meet during his career! That has all ended, and if he can keep his nose clean over the next two weeks, our winner here at 6-10, the state leader at 6- 11.25 (when was the last time California did not have a 7-foot high jumper at least sometime in the season?) will be at Sacramento. Pole Vault - A lengthy competition had Lemoore's Adam Giovanetti emerge the winner at a seasonal best 15-01. Long Jump - Another lengthy competition had King's Christian (Lemoore) 23 foot junior win at 21-08.5. Triple Jump - Foluso Akinradewo powered a surprising 49-03 right in front his Clovis West encampment in the stands to take the lead here. Hoover's 48+ foot brother combo of Kyle and Kevin Carano could not match the Clovis West star this night, with the State leader, Kevin (49-03.5 last weekend wind legal in the area meet) ending up fourth and a non-state qualifier at 47-09.25. Kyle was second at 48-00, and the lastest of the fine jumpers out of Bakersfield HS, Royce Jennings, was third at 47-10. Shot Put - A couple of weeks ago David Adamo was a 54 foot Shot Putter. A 57- 04.5 in the Area meet was quite impressive, but still he was ranked behind local Rodney Leisle (58-11) coming in here. Adamo shocked by becoming the State's lastest 60-footer (we are up to about ten now) with a 60-02.5 effort, as Leisle was second at 58-09. Discus - Some good pr's early in the evening had Rodney Leisle jump up about seven feet with a 178-06 win, and Selma's Joe Vasquez get out to 171-07 Girls: 100m - Tiffany Bennett had the season's fastest time of 12.03, but it was surprisingly Helima DeCree who emerged strongest over the last 40 meters to win in a Section All-Time best of 11.87 with the wind zero. 200m - Bennett had run 24.68 earlier in the season, with a good 24.90 win into the wind (-2.9 mps) over DeCree 24.90. 400m - Age-group star (57.01 last year as eighth grader) Tiffany Brown emerged this year as a frosh at Ridgeview HS, with the short petite star here racing a seasonal best of 56.65 to win over Terriyah Woods, who recorded a seasonal best of 57.01 in second. Early leader Amber Newsome, completing a fine local career here this evening, was the third section qualifier to State at 57.43. 800m - After a pedestrian first lap of 70.2, the pack took off, with a 33.1 third 200 not shaking many. Buchanan's Natalie Garcia burst forth with a strong final 150 meters to win at 2:16.98. 1600/3200 Meters - Kimberly Smith of Clovis West continued her mastery over the locals with a 5:05.84 1600m win where she eventually pulled away from cross- city rival Chrisie Gregory. In the 3200 a 5:38.3 first 1600 did not shake many, with Smith again emerging strongest over the final lap to win 11:12.99 over Gregory's 11:17.11. 100mHH - Dee Scott and Mandi Ruziecki had a good local rivalry. Scott has been hindered with an ankle problem which has hindered the Cal State Northridge- bound star's progress this season, with Ruziecki establishing a world record last June prior to the state meet with a fall on a dirt track that resulted in over sixty stitches on a cut knee! Anyway, here it was Ruziecki emerging with the win 14.74-14.91 (wind -0.3). 300mLH - Poor Cindy Wong, the section leader at 45.23 from way back in the Arcadia Open Meet, was off to the races over the first 150 meters, showing great poise under massive fatigue in not being able to lift her lead leg to clear hurdles six and seven, flattening both of them, then doing a pert ""alternate step"" thing at the last barrier before winning by a good ten meters. Only problem was that she was disqualified for trail leg violations! Lindsay Hall emerged the winner at 46.35. Tough final high school meet for Wong. 400 Meter Relay - Foothill took the win here in an area best for the season of 48.37. 1600 Meter Relay - Clovis West (Fresno) capped its third consecutive Section title with a fine well-balanced 3:53.35 win here over cross-city school Buchanan (3:57.43). High Jump - The area has some good jumpers. Britney Roberts and Nikki Avery equalled their seasonal bests of 5-06 to finish 1-2 on misses, with both talented in other areas. Avery was third in the 100 meters flat, with Roberts a Triple Jump winner. Pole Vault - Lexine Lesser (Hanford) improved to 11-00 to win over the Section's other 11-footers, Holly Caprio (10-06 2nd here) and Kelly Dahl (10-00 3rd). Long Jump - Dee Scott, mentioning, but not using a sore ankle as an excuse, jumped 18-01 to win comfortably here. Triple Jump - Britney Roberts shocked with a 40-07 wind-aided effort in this event recently. A tall, lithe athlete, the Bullard star shows great potential for jumping down the road in College as she fills in with strength and speed, bounding 38- 02.25 to win here. Shot Put/Discus - April Burton added to her stockpile of championship awards in this meet, tossing the Shot 41-04 to win, then tossing 148-09 in the Discus, with Krissy Schelir second in both.
