Great contest!  Warren Rogers had run 10.34 last year and twice in the mid 10.50's this season, Bennie Robinson 10.61, with Albert Hollis dominating Northern California.  Lamont Long was 10.60 the week before, with the others quick!!  Rogers out early here with a slight lead, but just last year when a Long Beach Poly Jackrabbit came from behind (Darrell Rideaux over Casey Combest from Kentucky), this year it was Bennie Robinson, who edged up to, and eventually past the flying Rogers to win in a nation-leading 10.41.

Afterwards Robinson stated that his thoughts when Rogers was ahead at 50 meters (they were next to each other in lanes) was that he "had to get him!"  He replied that he worked on his mechanics, "arm drive and lifting my knees" to bring about this move.

--Bennie Robinson met up with the other big star of the meet here, with Robinson in lane 6, Harris in 4, and New Yorker Carlos Bedoya a disappointing "no-show" in lane 5.  Robinson did not wait around, cranking the turn and leaving the field behind, with the move that Harris made in the 400 not evident here, as the latest Long Beach Poly star rolled to a 21.64 win.

Afterwards Robinson commented that the win was nice, but since his goal this year was to get under 21.0 he still had a long ways to go.  He commented, "I will go back to practice on Monday and just be another sprinter and work on making myself a better athlete.  At Long Beach Poly we are not a 'track team,' but a 'track family,' with everyone working together to help everyone else."  Bennie added that he would not be running on the LB Poly 4x400 relay later in the evening.

--The magic of Rickey Harris from Virginia continued here with an amazing stretch run to pull away from a talented field, including his conqueror at the Nike Indoor Classic in March, Anthony Ewers of New York.  Afterwards, in typical Harris style, instead of emphasizing the amazing nature of his effort, he replied, "The pace was way too slow, the food that I ate before the meet was still giving me problems in my stomach, and nobody moved with me when they should have."  Rickey, a 50.28 400 intermediate hurdler and (this evening see below) a 13.51 high hurdler, looked here like he could run somewhere in the 45's out of the blocks with a fresh and fully determined effort the entire race.

--Big field, slow start, with Nick Thornton of Rancho Buena Vista parlaying that in one of the local indoor meets to a huge win, which he repeated here.  For some reason everyone decided to wait for someone else to move the tempo up, with the talented group coming by the 400 at 57!

Thornton described his race as, "With 300 to go I made a move and really never sensed anyone else after that point."  When asked if he favors this "sit and kick" tactic, he replied, "I am really more comfortable with this style of racing."  Very few preps can handle the collegiate/international style of racing, which often involves a comfortable start and big move to the finish by the pack timed somewhere in the final 400 as Thornton has proved he can.  His margin of victory over a number of 1:53-1:55 types here shows the ability to run significantly faster and move right to collegiate running without a huge adjustment.

--Great race!  Jon Rankin always starts quickly, leading early through the first lap, with the pack 61.8 at the 400.  Sergio Campos and Neil McDonagh were the early leaders, with defending champ, Brian Turner, close behind.  After a 2:06 800 the tempo continued to roll through the 1200, with one sensing a huge number of people full of run for the last lap.  Campos, Seth Pilkington, Ryan Bousquet, and Turner were poised near the front as the last lap started.  Bousuqet started a huge move as the event headed down the backstretch for the last time, with Ranking eventually breaking away and chasing the Orange County star.  Bousquet held his form and speed down the homestretch, racing to a huge personal best (previous 4:16 last year) of 4:09.37, capping a week where he signed with Arizona State University with the biggest win of his life.

Afterwards Ryan talked.  "Earlier in the week I asked my Coach (Rich Medellin) if he had ever had a winner at Arcadia.  He replied that he had not, and I told him that maybe he would this year, sensing I had something special in me.  I am so happy right now I could cry!"

--Another interesting distance race in this year's meet, of quality, but one athlete showed dominationg over the pack.  Josh Rohatinsky was right at the front for all of the race.  The 400's rolled by early at 65.6-2:16-3:26.9 and 4:35.5, with contest here frequently run with the first 1600 at 4:30-35, then the talented pack builds steadily up over the final four laps and someone amazed with their second mile (last year 4:32-4:25 for winner Adam Tenforde of Washington).  The fifth lap did not raise the ante much, but Rohatinsky had finally had enough after a 5:45.0 fifth lap split.  The prancer in the Provo uniform slammed on the accelerator, racing away from the start/finish point, racing the next 800 meters in 2:12.5 (two laps in 66 after the previous 5 averaging 69), a tempo drop no one where could cope with.  At 7:57.5 a big last lap could have brought the BYU-bound Josh under 9:00, as he finished in 64.4 for a fine 9:01.94, leading the first sixteen under 9:20!

Afterwards Josh spoke of the race, "I felt very good the entire way, and did not have a real planned move, but took off when I felt good with three to go.  I never really felt terribly tired during the race, even right to the finish!  My seasonal goal is 8:45 and I am not afraid to speak about it."  It is hoped that he and Nathan Ritzenheim can hook up somewhere in June under good weather conditions and go at it!!!

--Bit of an event with a story!  The first time the athletes set to go in the race the starter's pistol clicked once and then fired.  Chris Morgan and most of the field were off to the races, with at least three others later commenting that they were thrown off completely by the starting problem.  Visitor from Virginia, Rickey Harris, did not even make it over the first hurdle the first time through.  After a quick huddle of meet officials and the starters it was determined that the fair thing to the field to do would be to re-run the event after the 100 meter dashes, some 25 minutes later.

The second race was clean, with Harris off to the races, blasting a full two-tenths of a second personal best of 13.51, and taking down a good Meet Record of 13.61 set by Deworski Odom from a few years back when the Philadelphia flyer was at his finest! It is the best time in the nation this year.

Harris, the classic understater, commented, "I did not run a good race.  My step in between the hurdles was off, and I did not feel very good.  I had too much food to eat before I came to the meet, and felt heavy!"  We wonder what Rickey can do when he really feels good--like 8.9!

Chris Morgan did take the first race at 13.90, a time statistically valid for the record books, with his 13.90 and 13.94 within 25 minutes some great running!

--The evening's running events started off with the always exciting relays.  Clovis West (Fresno) 41.40 the previous weekend, was beat up and scratched, with Stephen Hayes of University City slightly tweaked and slowing that unit a tad.  Serra (Gardena) blazed a yearly state leading and the #4 time in the nation 41.14 to win over LA City power Cleveland (Reseda).

--An decade old meet record (10:09.71 by Corona del Mar from 1989) fell here to a determined West Hills group, with Don Lugo certainly deserving credit for pushing them strongly through the first three legs.  Ben Aragon narrowly led over Don Lugo 3:05.4-3:05.5 through the 1200, with Kyle Conerly 50.0 on leg two as WH kept its one meter leg into the 800.  Kevin Schible raced 1:59.4 to narrowly lead over Lugo, with Evan Fox taking off on the anchor and roaring through the 1200 at 3:03.2 for the first three laps!  Evan came back to earth a bit over the final 400 and close at 4:09.4, with the 10:04.12 a quite impressive clocking and easly the best in the nation for the year, giving the folks at Penn Relays something to aim at later in the month.

--With Citrus JC only having one Pole Vault pit, the "beach facility" set up from Ron Morris was brought in and laid down on the crown of the football field right down the middle of the infield.  It was the facilty where Stacy Drigila set an American Women's record, so the raised runway had a good history.  It would work out well here, with some great vaulting on a quick bouncy set up that had vaulters moving their steps back a bit once they figured it out.  A number of personal bests took place, including Jonathan Takahashi (Grossmont, La Mesa) and Tyler Gray (West Valley, Cottonwood) who joined Logan Odden and Shane Hackett in 15-06 clearances.  Hackett had only one miss through 15-06 in the competition, with Odden three to that successful point.  At 16-00 both Hackett and Odden cleared on their first trial, with Takahashi and Gray taking home 15-06 pr's.  Hackett, who cleared 16-00 for the first time in a meet two weekends back, was over 16-04 on his second try for a personal best, with Odden, 16-05 last week not able to match Shane this day, as Hackett next tried 16-08, but could not make that height.

--After a stirring Discus competition to start off the evening competition, with Rhuben Williams tossing what is probably an LA City record in the platter event, the group headed over to the Shot Put ring.  A good competition had three over 60 feet, with Rhuben Williams (60-03.5), Nick Arrenhius (60-03.25), and Rusty Price (60-02) leading after the trials.  Arrenhius took the lead at 60-05.25 on his first effort in the Finals, with Williams following that with a 61-10.25 effort to edge ahead.  Price improved to 61-02 on his fifth throw, with Arrenhius finishing with two fouls.  Williams let it all hang out on his final effort, a 62-04.25, his outdoor best this year, and the #6 throw in the nation for the season outdoors.

--at 4:00 pm on Saturday evening the Boys Discus starts off the Invitational portion of the program, with Official Lloyd Higgins beaming over his charges and the athletes having all the attention of early-arriving Invite spectators and fans from the Open Meet hungering for the next level of competition.  They were, as usual, not let down by this group.

The lists took quite a beating here.  Dillon Hayes (Tustin) heated it up a bit with a 174-00 pr on his first throw in the trials.  The second flight included the bombers, with Travis Pendleton sailing it out to 190-07 on his first effort, with Nick Arrenhius answering with 187-06.  Rhuben Williams pr'd with a 170-03 on his second effort in the Trials, with Manny Eleyae 174-01 to move into third on his second toss.  Pendleton was 186-10 on his second trial, with Arrenhius spinning smoothly and launching his second toss out to an impressive 207-00!  Williams continued his improvement to 178-07 on his third throw, with Travis Jones from San Diego 180-02 on that effort.   Pendleton was 188-05, with Arrenhius continuing to impress this day with a 206-06 third throw!  Williams continued an amazing day in this event with a 184-03 fourth effort, and Travis Jones was 183-02 on his fifth toss to cement fourth place.  Pendleton added 192-10 - 188-02 and 191-04 efforts in the finals for an impressive series (six throws between 186-10 and 192-10), with Arrenhius, letting it all hang out, three fouls in the Finals.

The magic was started for what sould be a superb evening of action, with the great Discus group again setting the tone for the meet----!

A meeting of the top athletes from around the State and visitor Monique yates of Houston!  Interesting event, with Porchea Carroll moving away from the field after about 30 meters, with a "head-down arms driving" style.  Top 400 runner Aisha Margain did come back a bit by the finish with a seasonal best 11.78 to put her about a foot back of Carroll's 11.73.  Carroll is establishing herself as the State's top dasher this year, the lastest in the long Rio Mesa tradition!

Later in the evening with the meet having weaved some interesting tales of "come-throughs" and "upsets" a top group would meet here over 200 meters.  Monique Yates of Houston had run 23.59 last year and was strong in the 100 here.  Aisha Margain had stormed the backstretch in the 400 relay and been narrowly beaten in the 100.  Angel Perkins had shocked with her 52.60 for 400 meters in this meet, with Porchea Carroll the big 100 meter winner.  Others could fly!  This one boiled down to strength, and there is maybe no one more powerful than Aisha Margain, as Coach Darrell Hampton's star powered away to a narrow victory down the homestretch over amazing soph Perkins, whose 52.60 and 23.93 double was pretty darn good!  We left the picture out of the winner on her knees deposting her lunch on the lawn, with the 4x400 still to go!!

Amazing contest.  Monique Henderson, the Junior National champ from last year with a 51.96 best always runs strong here, with a good group to challenge.  Henderson and Angel Perkins were out quick, with Perkins in Lane 4 and Henderson in 5.  Monique always works the third 100 meters very hard, with Perkins staying very close during that very tough running that usually leaves all behind!  Into the homestretch it was surprisingly still a good race, with the all blue and gold clad Perkins amazingly edging away over the final 30 meters to a 52.62-53.25 win over Henderson.

Perkins is quite an amazing story.  Last year she emerged in the LA Indoor meet as a frosh where she almost nipped Nakiya Johnson in the 500 yard event and had other very strong looking efforts!  When the spring came we all asked, "Where is Angel Perkins?"  Well, it turned out that she spent most of last spring in a foot cast with problems, emerging in May for League, Section, and State action in amazing fashion, including a National age-14 200 meter best of 23.43!  She did win the National Scholastic Indoor Championship this winter at 54.30, the #2 time run in the nation this winter behind Lashinda Demus's 53.85.

Perkins' comments after this run shows her special determination.  When asked what her strategy was for the race she said, "I figured that if I could stay with Monique through the 200 and 300 marks that I had the strength to beat her."  When asked what gave her the confidence and faith in her strong finish she replied, "We work on strength in practice and I do a lot of 500 and 350 repeats to build my finish.  My goal today was to get into the 52's."  When asked to what level she would be interested in competing this year, her answer, "All the way to the Olympic Trials if I can qualify."  This young lady brings a special determination, spirit, and sense to her competing that is a real tribute to herself and the Gahr program that Coach Dan Fitzpatrick and staff are building.

--Quite a deep race!  Liz Morse had run super indoors and led the country with a clocking in the low 2:10 range.  Afer a 63.6 400 with Spring Dawson (Vallejo) and Jenna Timinsky (San Dieguito Academy, Encinitas)leading, and Morse close behind, the racing started down the backstretch, with the red-clad Dawson trying to pull away and Morse following quickly.  Around the final turn Morse, who has run in the low 56's this year for a flat 400 and led her team to the State Cross-Country title this Fall, showed the great combination of talent she has, putting it in gear over the final 150 and racing away to a 2:09.40 win, with Heather Hennessy leading the great pack in second at 2:10.53, with eight under 2:15 in the field!

After, Morse commented. "It was so wonderful to finally win here.  I have been to Arcadia every year since my ninth grade year, and one of my goals was to win here before I left high school.  I felt I ran a good race, it was very exciting.  My goals are simply to run as fast as I can this year and to win all my races."  One of the truly nice people in the sport, a brilliant student, Morse's fierce competitive nature in competition is a contrast to the mild-mannered, reflective style that is her personality.  Some people let their running do their talking, she is one!

Great race with great result!  The legend of Alejandra Barrientos started here last year when she blasted a 66 final 400 with 31 final 200 to win at 4:47.94 at the start of a season that had her win the California title at 4:45.02 and take the Junior National 1500 title!  She had a fine Fall, ending with the Foot Locker Cross-Country Championships, and would face a great group here.  Alicia Craig had taken the Foot Locker Western Regional and run 4:51 indoors, with a flock of others who could fly!!!

Barrientos often clears out at the start, and led the first 400 at 68 seconds, with Alicia Craig and young Utah star Laura Zeigle close behind.  The 800 went in a quick 2:21, with the defending champion still narrowly ahead, with the pace slowing to 76 the third 400 with a 3:37 for the 1200 time.  During the final 400 Barrientos steadily pulled away to her 4:46.60 win, with Craig 4:49.59 and Zeigle 4:50.14, amazing times in that obvious weather concerns hinder any speed training for the second and third placers this time of year, with the first eight finishers under 5:05 in the contest!

After, Barrientos spoke of interest in defending her championship here, with the race going about as planned for herself.  She would run the distance medley later in the evening and looked forward to that with the other members of her 12:00.8 squad!

As amazing a performance as any in this star-studded meet came from the winner here.  This was as good a distance group as has ever been gathered for a mid-season prep meet, with a stunning number of athletes who had won very high honors and would race impressively here, with seventeen finishing under eleven minutes!  But, as is sometimes the case, the cream really rises to the top and prepdoms next great distance star may have emerged in a real serious way here.  Agoura's Laura Jakosky led real early, with Robyn Stevens of Vacaville up front through 74.1-2:32 and 3:54.8 first three lap splits.  A long, comfortable line of athletes trailed Anita Siraki of Hoover in Glendale as she took over the pace during a fourth lap that had her come by at 5:16.3.  Two weeks previous Siraki had raced a 4:52.4 1600 and 10:34.9 3200 on the same day, with the 3200 featuring a 5:05 final 1600!  The 5:16 did not leave her exhausted, as at that four lap point Anita immediately pulled away from the pack and ran the next 400 in 73 seconds (6:29 at five laps)!  10:30 3200 pace had dropped to 9:44 pace after four laps, enough to leave most female preps in the wake, as it did here.  No one could really react, with Sara Bei leading the second pack's charge, but with each step Siraki continued to slightly edge away.  The tough tempo continued, with a 75 and 76 having Siraki come by with one lap to go at 9:00, within reach of Kirsten O'Hara's 10:18.41 Meet Record from 1984.  After a 38 first 200 to start the last lap, our winner did prove to be mortal, covering the final 200 in 40 seconds to just miss the record with her 10:18.61 winner, leaving herself something to go for next year.  Sara Bei led the pack's chase with a fine 10:30.81 for second, with flocks of yearly and lifetime bests for those in the pack!

Siraki, whose family left Iran in 1985 to immigrate to the U.S. is a very comfortable personality.  She indicated that Coach Greg Switzer of Hoover commented on the quick, final 1600 of two weeks ago by stating that he felt she could carry out such a tactic in a significantly faster race when fresh.  That was kind of the rough game plan for this evening's race, with the plot carried out to perfection.  Anita did indicate she really only felt tired during the final half-lap, with the bright-eyed star not seeming overwhelmed with a performance that buried some very good people.

--some good athletes here, but Lashinda Demus is currently in another world in this event!  With Wilson in white-clad uniforms, new for this meet, it was not difficult to spot the Wilson star racing along in the middle of the track, sailing over the staggered hurdles far ahead of the opposition.  Continuing on into the tape in fine style, Lashinda emerged with a huge Meet Record and Nation-Leading 40.97 time.  The old Meet standard was 41.94 by Angel Patterson, with some great people about a second and a half back on the all-time list this time of year here.

Demus described her race as a good one technically, with steps and race pattern going as planned.  She perked up when asked about when she was going to approach the 40.18 National Record by Leslie Maxie from 1984, by excitedly and in a very animate manner stating, "Everytime I run I try to get that record."  When asked how she will improve to that time she stated, "We will do sharpening work in May and June that should drop my time a lot."  The Track & Field News Athlete of the Year last year has more successful range than any athlete ever out of Southern California, with national-level marks from 100 through 800 meters, with 13.83 and 40.44 hurdle clockings in addition to her great relay efforts for the Wilson squad!

--As the debate over who should be Athlete of the Meet raged near the end of the meet, Announcer Scott Davis spoke over the walkie-talkie after the anchor leg, "I think we just saw our Athlete of the Meet."  Wilson, with Coach Terry Kennedy's team frighteningly deep, won three of the four relay races in this meet of the 4x100 and 4x400 variety.  That means A and B teams had to run, with the teams clocking frightening 47.08 and 48.09 short stick race clockings, and preceded this final Invitational event with a 3:51.41 Seeded race 4x400 win.  Star Lashinda Demus was left with a little to make up on the anchor of the Invitational contest here, kind of an instant replay to Kinshasa Davis a few years back for Wilson.  Anyway, with the crowd whooping and hollering, Demus started a ways back of the leading Berkeley High team, and steadily bore down on the anchor Yellowjacket runner, bursting by during the homestretch during a 52.6 leg that put a perfect cap on the evening and gave her squad a 3:44.23 win!

--This turned out to be another great race near the end of the evening.  San Lorenzo Valley had raced an amazing 12:00.8 early in the year, and hoped for some competition here.  They received some, with an outstanding Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach)squad leading most of the event!  Super frosh Lynn Dixon from MiCo sailed through the 1200 leg in 3:35 to take the lead, with San Lorenzo Valley a fine 3:42.5 lead-off.  57.9 and 2:19.7 legs for SLV had worked things close, with Alejandra Barrientos grabbing the baton close behind Mira Costa at exactly 7:00.0.  That 7:00 time is very, very significant, because that is exactly the time that Polly Plumer picked up the baton during her solo anchor split in the University of Irvine National-Record setting effort at the Mt. SAC Relays in 1982.  Plumer raced 4:44.5 with Uni recording a still standing 11:44.53 best for the distance.  Barrientos eventually made her way past Mira Costa anchor Cosette Smith, with a 4:55.6 anchor having San Lorenzo record a super 11:55.68 time, the number two clocking ever in this competition behind East of Salt Lake City's 11:53.85 from 1996.  With the entire team underclass, SLV has something to look forward to next year.  Mira Costa, with a team of Lynn Dixon, Shawna Benard, Krystal Starcliff, and Cosette Smith clocked a fine 12:03.55, with the first two teams recording the top two times in the Nation this spring!

With a very talented field, it was surprising when only three, the Ziemann twins, and Shquay Brignac of Taft were able to clear 5-06.  Despite some good efforts at 5-08, Brignac, who was over 5-10 in middle school, was the only one who could clear that height, with three misses to end the competititon at 5-09.
