--Sam Germany’s team from North Las Vegas came over and went back home with a big win over a couple of the nation’s top teams. Nicole Ireland is a top sprinter/hurdler for the Las Vegas program, but obviously Coach Germany and staff have developed firepower to go along with Nicole. Wilson paid back Berkeley for their win in the mid 46’s at the Arcadia meet.

--Berkeley continued its fine meet here, racing away to a convincing win over Wilson (Long Beach), with the relay contests between itself and JW North of Riverside, that will probably help to decide the State Team title, will have to wait until June, as North was at Texas last week and not here this weekend.

--Morningside put together a great effort at the end of the day to win here, with Wilson not running Lashinda Demus, and with the combination of relay and open possibilities here, a number of teams at less than full strength. However, Morningside will give the state another excellent relay group come end of the season.

--Wilson started the meet off on the Girls’ side with a new National Leader. MacKenzie Hill busted the event open with a 2:16.9 leg, with Scott’s 2:23.3, Ross’s 2:22.7, and Freeman’s 2:14.4 anchor earning a 9:17.44 clocking, excellent for an essentially solo effort in a event rarely run by local squads. Coach Terry Kennedy and staff’s development of the Wilson team continues to amaze in every event area on the track.

--Great race here by Berkeley. Perfect race for the group of "long sprinters" who run for Coach Darrell Hampton and are in shape for the 100-400 meter distances. Good group of teams against the Yellowjackets had the girls on their toes, with senior veteran Aisha Margain racing to record land all by herself on the anchor 400 leg. When informed that they had set a National Auto-timed record after the race was over, the team was surprised. They said that Coach Hampton had stated they would meet some top competition, but that he had not set any time goals for them or given specific directions on the event. The girls said that they just ran their best and it worked out nicely. Coach Hampton commented, "The girls had no idea they could set a record in the event. They did not run a perfect race and can improve. We will run the event next week at Vallejo and hope to better our time." Penick, Keith, and Aisha Margain are senior athletes.

Jennifer Clarke (Alta Loma) 10-00

--Laura Chen suffered a rare loss, with Nevada’s Ambe Nolte and Jamie Kolar over 11-06 while Laura could only manage 11-00 on this day. The event was marred by some tragedy, with Kristen Hambaroff of Centennial of Bakersfield, having a great year with a number of 11-00 clearances, suffering a compound fracture while landing cleanly in the pit during the competition after clearing 10-00 early in the day. The delay could certainly have been expected to affect some of the vaulters with the ambulance carefully backing in and Hambaroff given excellent attention before being removed from the facility.

200m - (R-1) (+4.0) 1. Aisha Margain (Berkeley) 23.10w, 2. Monique Henderson (Morse, SD) 23.16, 3. Alexis Weatherspoon (Grant, Van Nuys) 23.99, 4. Porchea Carroll (Rio Mesa, Oxnard) 24.16, 5. --Another great contest!!! Henderson was beaten in the 100, so she had extra motivation here, and she really dug in around the turn. The defending State 400 Champ Henderson looked unbeatable into the straightaway with about a two meter lead, but the determined Margain, who runs with a style as powerful as any prep female in recent years, built steadily up during the final 150 meters to eventually edge up to and past the San Diego area star for the win in a stunning 23.10, with Henderson, defeated by Angel Perkins last weekend at Arcadia over 400 meters when the Gahr soph raced 52.62, perhaps feeling a bit hexed lately! Wow!!! The running come late May and June will be stunning in the Golden State!!! Margain’s 23.85 Arcadia win leads the country with this the fastest time run thus far in the nation under any conditions!

(R-2) (+4.0) Erin Brzezinski (1000 Oaks) 25.01, 2. Michelle Stinnette (Cleveland, Res) 25.22, 4. Stephanie Blake (Francis Parker, SD) 25.55, 5. Elizabeth Anderson (Bellevue, Wa) 25.67, 6. Aly Chavez (Los Gatos) 25.98, 7. Schannel Strong (Eisenhower, R) 25.99.

Sheena Goss (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove) 58.38, 6. Elizabeth Anderson (Bellevue, Wa) 58.56, 7. Robin Miramontes (Upland) 59.36.

--Penick, another of the strong all-around sprinters in Coach Darrell Hampton’s Berkeley group raced to an excellent 55.54 win here over a good field, with a time that could lead to some points in the State Meet.

(Open) 1. Jie Ya Wu (China) 56.40, 2. Kandace Wilson (Walnut) 57.52, 4. Nicole McClendon (Alemany, Mission Hills) 58.56, 5. Ocie Parks (Fremont, Oakland) 58.95, 6. Aly Chavez (Los Gatos) 59.09, 8. Tricia Floyd (Mohave, North Las Vegas) 59.72.

800m (R-1) Shantae McKinney (Westchester, LA) 2:14.82, 3. Jenna Keith (Centennial, Bak) 2:15.21, 4. Anita Siraki (Hoover, Gl) 2:15.41, 6. Morgan Banks (Sir Francis Drake, San Anselmo) 2:16.84, 7. Janelle Del Soldato (Crescenta Valley, La Cresc) 2:17.23, 8. Christine Atkins (Campolindo, Moraga) 2:18.83.

--Leisurely early pace had Jenna Keith take the pace at the 400 in 67.0. Anita Siraki had already run the 1500, with this a test of her speed/strength. Siraki challenged on the backstretch, fought up to Keith by the final turn, with age-group star McKinney bursting past on the homestretch to race to her best time for the year.

(R-2) 1. Fabiola Saenz (Mexico) 2:14.60, 2. Christina Hand (Fallbrook) 2:19.05, 3. Amonica Phipps (Morse, SD) 2:19.63, 4. Keyotta Delemeanea (Poly, LB) 2:20.29, 5. Melissa Dixon (Compton) 2:20.30, 6. Kim Ramirez (Torrance) 2:20.34, 7. Leslie Barrie (Torrance) 2:21.36.

1500m

Sara Bei (Montgomery, Santa Rosa) 4:30.43, 2. Anita Siraki (Hoover, Glendale) 4:32.30, 3. Jenna Keith (Centennial, Bak) 4:36.52, 5. Rosanna Kirkendall (Lancaster) 4:43.52, 7. Michelle Beritzhoff (Los Gatos) 4:46.09, 8. Lindsay Duke (Bonita, La Verne) 4:49.72, 9. Christine Atkins (Campolindo, Moraga) 4:51.25, 10. Kelly Moore (Avalon, Catalina Island) 4:53.83, 11. Jayme Ambos (Rialto) 4:53.90, 12. Angelita Green (Poly, L:B) 4:54.77, 13. Jennifer Turk (Newbury Park) 4:56.95, 14. Michelle Sizer (Sultana, Hesp) 4:56.95, 14. Michelle Sizer (Sultana) 4:57.95, 15. Linde Bedke (Centennial, Bak) 4:58.15.

--Great race here! Anita Siraki had munched Sara Bei and a number of others in her 10:18 3200 last weekend at Arcadia that featured a 5:02 final 1600 that waved "by-by" to everyone and had the Hoover star win by twelve seconds. Australian Kristy Munroe led early through the 400 in 72.3 with the pack close behind. The pack up front consisted of Siraki, Sara Bei, Munroe, and Jenna Keith of Bakersfield through the 1100 meter point (one lap to go) reached in 3:23. At the start of the last lap Siraki attempted to pull away, with Bei obviously determined to not give up any ground this weekend. Into the final turn the two sprinted, with Bei powering up and off her toes, while Siraki is more of a "back on the heels" power runner. Sara was full of run, sprinting in through the tape to win at 4:30.43.

Afterwards Sara indicated that it was her birthday and she hoped for something special! Sara indicated that Anita and she had talked about the race beforehand and wanted to go for a good time. After last week Bei indicated that she did not want to allow her rival to gain any gap at any time, with confidence in her finishing kick, which he followed through on today in good style. Sara stated that she has been healthy lately and looks forward to more good running for the rest of the spring season.

Sara’s time is the #2 mark in the nation this spring behind Alejandra Barrientos’ 4:29.7 on the way to her win at Arcadia last week over 1600 meters.

Ali Valle (San Luis Obispo) 10:53.17, 16. Lindsay Walsh (Stockdale, Bak) 10:54.15.

--Sara Gorton needed some help here, but decided to do it alone anyway. She said that she wanted to average 76 per lap, and came by the 1600 at 5:06.5! After that she admitted that she had a tough time pressing ahead on pace, with a 7:42.7 at the six lap point. She commented that the weather was pleasant to run in, and her time here narrowly edged what Anita Siraki of Glendale Hoover (previous yearly national leader for the 3k distance) came by the 3000m point last week when she dominated the group at Arcadia. Boy, if the two had met up it would have been something (but Sara had her grandparents 50th wedding anniversary last weekend and did not run at Arcadia as she has the last few years!). Sara stated that he seasonal goals were to help her very close team win its state title and she would run four events in that meet to do that. The Arizona 1600 record is 4:51 and she would like to break that this May. She will go to the Great Southwest Meet and run in the Golden West, and possibly the Junior Nationals. She looks forward to competing in the future for the University of Colorado, commenting that Kara Wheeler and others return for that team and she looks forward to adjusting to that level of competition.

--Morningside put together a consistent solid effort, with 10.5 sprinter Carlos Moore on leg number 2 to put them out in front. Poly had Bennie Robinson on the anchor, but in a freak accident, when back in about fourth place Robinson started out just ahead of Calvin Reddin of Mohave and while driving his arms furiously trying to catch up, the Poly star had the baton hit Reddin’s knee and fly out of his hand. The crowd missed a chance to see a furious anchor leg between Reddin and Robinson, the 100 and 200 meter titlests this day.

--Jason Lovell challenged Poly’s Deon Cason on the anchor leg, but the Jackrabbits, who seem to have a ton of people who can run 48-49 won here with a 3:15.87. Serra’s 3:13.99 Arcadia win leads the nation here, with Poly having a 3:15.63 from the Alemany Relays earlier in the year (the country’s #6 clocking thus far this season).

--Great race here to start the day at 8:00 a.m sharp-Don Lugo hooked up with its conqueror at Arcadia last week in the distance Medley (West Hills, Santee) and its two-time conqueror locally in the 4x800 (Etiwanda). Mike Serratos led off in 1:55.6, Raphael Asafo-Agyei was 1;57.3, Art Garcia was 1:57.9, and Nick Branen was 1:54.7 with the team recording a time that leads the nation for the year. Branen spoke for the team when he said their goal was to run in the mid 7:30’s, but they were happy with what they did. They have been beaten twice by Etiwanda in the Chino and La Verne Relays, and wanted to return the favor this day. Branen was placed on the anchor specifically to try to counter Evan Fox. The team hoped through their effort here to show themselves worthy of fund-raising towards trips to the Penn Relays or National Scholastic Outdoor Meet at the end of the year. Last year the team recorded a 7:53, so they hoped to get in the 7:40’s this year here.

--Highlight here was the return of Josh Spiker, with everyone holding their breath as the local star stepped on the track for his team on the second leg. Amazingly, the senior who ran 8:56 last year for 3200 meters and 14:43 at the Mt. SAC Invite on the Cross-Country course before going down with a big-time stress fracture in late October, blasted four laps in an unreal time for his first track effort of the season. Zooming through three laps at 3:06.2, Spiker took his squad to the lead, then finished in an amazing 4:12.9! The fluidity shown by Josh during his leg here was quite unreal, with one hoping he does not wake up in the next couple of days with any special aches or pains. Obviously if he does not we have another star added to the distance mix, with Josh’s willingness to go out after a good time from the gun so neat to have a part of the sport. Our prayers are literally with him.

--Chadd Smith, who cleared 6-09 indoors has had petallar tendon problems since then and will have surgery after the season, with training seriously curtailed until that point. He will continue to jump with training and jumping a bit restricted. A shorter approach was quite pleasing here with a 6-10 personal best and a win over a good field, so maybe in some ways "less is more."

WINNERS AND AMERICAN ATHLETES LISTED IN FOLLOWING RESULTS

Boys:

--Bennie Robinson continues to lend strong stock to his portfolio with a big win here. With a nice 1.6 meter per second breeze behind he and the others, Bennie turned a good start into a run-away, racing a time just behind the Nation-Leading 10.41 he recorded while running down Warrren Rogers of Serra last weekend at Arcadia. The only faster times recorded in the nation thus far this spring are Robinson’s and Rogers’ clockings at Arcadia.

--One of those magic races. Reddin had been disqualified for lane violations at Arcadia last week after a good performance, so probably was looking for an especially good effort here. From his outside lane position, with the wind behind him at near the legal limit he charged to an impressive 21.15, with a ton of big break-throughs behind the Nevada flyer! The time is the nation’s #2 clocking behind the 21.03 by Fernando Blakely of Alabama from earlier in the season.

(R-2) (+2.2) 1. Jarret Brown (Rancho Cucamonga) 22.00w, 2. Rodney Diggs (Loyola, LA) 22.04, 3. Denye Versher (St. Mary’s, Berk) 22.28, 4. Damon Brock (Rialto) 22.31.

--Great stretch run here between Central Section star Reggie Allen from the Fresno area and Clark Goodwin, with the Ventura star continuing his great season with a strong run to the finish to dip under the 48 second barrier for the first time!

800m (R-1) Heleodoro Navarro (Mexico) 1:52.68, 2. Chris Anders-Wells (El Camino Real, Woodland Hills) 1:53.46, 3. David Harwell (Los Altos, Hac Hts) 1:55.08, 4. Matt Bates (Los Gatos) 1:56.28, 5. Sean Ricketts (Rancho Bernardo, SD) 1:56.82, 7. Ontae Chaney (Cleveland, Res) 1:57.32, 8. Harry Williams (Loyola, LA) 1:58.30, 9. Ryan Hall (Big Bear) 1:58.34, 10. Doug Westfall (Torrance) 1:58.82, 11. Tom Stepp (Arcadia) 1:58.9, 12. Jose Botello (Arroyo Grande) 1:59.03.

--Smooth-striding Anders-Wells was out at 26.8 (200) and 55.6 (400), with Navarro moving up to challenge during the third 200, with surprising tall David Harwell moving up. Navarro powered away during the final 200, with Anders-Wells improving his low 1:54 clocking from last week at the Arcadia Open Meet to 1:53.46 here. The El Camino Real star is a junior.

(R-2) Erby Houston (Gahr) 1:56.65, 2. Jeran Carr (Bonita, La Verne) 1:57.33, 4. Sam Myovich (Edison, Fr) 1:57.46, 5. Nestor Carranza (Paramount) 1:58.79,..7. Jef Hoeft (Los Gatos) 1:59.25, 8. Daniel Lindstrom (Granite Hills, Apple Valley) 1:59.76.

1500m - 1. Juan-Luis Bamos (Mexico) 3:53.86, 2. Ryan Hall (Big Bear) 3:55.25, 3. Aaron Fisher (Franklin Central, Indianapolis, In) 3:55.87, 4. Sergio Campos (Marshall, LA) 3:59.20, 5. Daniel Clements (Taft, WH) 4:00.14, 6. Kyle Dunst (Peninsula, RH) 4:02.19, 7. Jeran Carr (Bonita, La Verne) 4:02.73, 9. Ben Armel (Damien, La Verne) 4:06.92, 11. Eric Arentz (Fontana) 4:08.22.

--Ryan Hall stepped out here with a 57.2 opening 400 that left the field a wee bit behind. Through a 2:00.5 800 he still had no company, with the 1200 coming by at 3:05.2. Juan-Luis Bamos of Mexico looks like a very experienced and talented runner, and he eased up to Hall during the bell lap, with the differences in momentum very obvious around the final turn, where the southern visitor reeled Hall in, then gunned him down during the stretch run-Hall was 50 seconds for the final 300-about 67-68 400 meter pace, and probably learned a lesson in overall pacing this morning. Hall’s 3:55.25 is the National leader for preps for the year for the 1500 distance, with Aaron Fisher, a visitor from Indiana, looking very good while following the top duo in third.

3000m - Aaron Fisher (Franklin Central, Indianapolis, In) 8:37.63, 2. Jesse Hodges (South Hills, W. Covina) 8:39.91, 4. Chris Layman (Corona) 8:46.81, 5. Tyler Jones (Rialto) 8:47.26, 6. Noel Inzuna (Rialto) 8:47.32, 7. Russ Martin (Los Gatos) 8:47.97, 8. JJ Duke 8:49.41, 9. Art Diaz (Fontana) 8:55.24, 10. Brian Dunn (Franklin Central, Ind, In) 8:55.27, 11. Robert Kubler (Crespi, Enc) 8:55.73, 13. Nick Branen (Don Lugo, Chino) 8:58.25, 14. Puneet Mahan (Norwalk) 8:58.90, 15. Brian Steihmeier (Rim of World, Lake Arrowhead) 9:03.98, 16. Jacob Wagoner (Sultana, Hesperia) 9:05.48.

--Aaron Fisher, a 4:14 soph 1600 runner last year in Indiana here seemed content to pace teammate Brian Dunn through a 4:41 1600, with Dunn slowly falling back. Jesse Hodges took over the tempo with a lap and a half to go, with Fisher racing away during a 29 second final 200. Fisher is quite impressive and should be well under 4:10 and 9:00 in the right races this spring.

110m HH - (R-1) (+0.5) Chris Morgan (Taft, WH) 14.04, 2. Marcus Raines (Littlerock) 14.11, 3. Jeremy Thornburg (Cathedral City) 14.45, 4. Kenneth Thomas (Gardena) 14.46, 5. Ransom Minyard (Durango, Las Vegas) 14.60, 6. Kurt Siebert (Norco) 14.67, 8. Sun Lee (Los Gatos 15.46.

--Morgan broke quickly, with Raines closing down from way across the track in lane 1, but Chris found strength over the last hurdle or two to edge in ahead. Raines hit a hurdle in the middle of the event that cost him momentum. Morgan has not been beaten by his local rival Raines this year in a Highs contest, even though it has been very close.

(R-2) (+0.5) Daveed Diggs (Berkeley) 14.47, 2. T. Walker (Poly, LB) 14.79, 3. Dusty Gould (1000 Oaks) 14.94, 4. Michael Dickerson (Poly, LB) 15.06, Jeff Garrison (North, Riv) 15.06, 6. Justin Bowie (Ganesha, Pomona) 15.21, 7. Dez Jackson (Mohave, No Las Vegas) 15.31, 8. James Jeleniowski (Glendora) 15.42, 9. Paul Nurre (Upland) 15.44

--Diggs dominated this group, with the North Coast star racing away early.

300mIH (R-1) Jeremy Thornburg (Cathedral City) 37.92, 2. Kurt Siebert (Norco) 38.59, 3. Halihl Guy (St. Mary’s, Berkeley) 39.19, 4. AJ Mendez (Palo Verde, Blythe) 39.24, 5. James Jeleniowski (Glendora) 39.26, 6. Marcus Raines (Littlerock) 39.31, 7. Dusty Gould (1000 Oaks) 40.33.

--Mid 37’s competitor Marcus Raines led early on, with a big problem over the fifth hurdle that allowed Thornburg to move ahead to win comfortably over Kurt Siebert.

(R-2) Michael Dickerson (Poly, LB) 39.00, 2. Jeff Garrison (North, Riv) 39.42, 3. Terrell Walker (Poly, LB) 40.39, 4. Claudio Salazar (Durango, Las Vegas) 40.54.
