--Second race on Monique Henderson's schedule some 19 minutes after the 400 (400 at 1:12 – 100 at 1:31) was the 100 meter dash, where Henderson has clocked one of the nation's best clockings this year at 11.61. She let no one down after the bit of a carry over fatigue from the 51.31 400 (see below for that) with an 11.88 run here that featured a "low-arms sweep" near the end. 51.31 and 11.88 compare nicely to the first part of Valerie Briscoe's runs at the 1979 Arcadia Invitational where she was 11.57-53.77-23.77 and a good 1600 relay leg! With the 200 and 1600 relay go to Monique complained of blisters on the hot track (or the friction of her quick feet on that surface??).

--Number three on Henderson's schedule was the 200 at 2:38 pm, some 67 minutes after the 51.31 and 11.88 100 meters. Again, the Morse star was not going to let anyone down on her "magic" day, blazing a 23.70 clocking, the #3 time in the nation behind Florida's Erica Whipple and Sonya Richards. The 51.31 (400), 11.88 (100m), and 23.70 (200) is superior to Briscoe’s 11.57-53.77, then 23.77 triple from Arcadia in 1979 (with both a 400 relay leg at the end).

--Most stunning prep performance of the year for preps in the country this year!! After a defeat by Angel Perkins in the Arcadia meet and a 53.26 for herself in her league meet, Monique Henderson was willing to let it all out here. On a beautiful, sunny, and warm May afternoon Henderson blasted out of the blocks and was totally off to the races. Clocked by Coach Gary MacDonald at 12.2 for the first 100 around the turn, Henderson kept the pressure up down the straightaway, coming by the 200 at 24.4. She was way out in front by this time, with all in the stadium sensing something was special as she maintained great form down the stretch. The time that everyone had was well under 52 seconds, with the automatic time a stunning 51.31! This is the #4 prep time ever run behind the 50.87 by Denean Howard from 1982. It obliterated the National Federation Record of 52.28 set by Angel Perkins of Gahr (Cerritos) a week previous, with the duo meeting in a week at the State Meet. No one can remember how far back one has to go find a time when two athletes who have broken a National Federation Record have met in the same season in a regularly contested event. Angel Perkins and Monique Henderson are the real deal (obviously) with next one something to behold!!!

Davila took the pace out, through 70 for the first 400 and 2:27 for the 800, with Desiree pulling away to her 4:59.02 win, as Komisinski collapsed after she crossed the line, as it was toasty warm at this 12:30 hour!

--the near "death-march" conditions heat-wise made this event very, very tough. Manson has run in the 10:30's and qualified under 10:40 for the finals here last week. As everyone at this distance, she struggled to an 11:07.16 win, with the heat probably costing her at least 30 seconds. With the State going to time standards beyond the regular qualifiers to make it to state next year, it is hoped that regions such as this will consider running the meet at a time when the distance groups have a fair chance at those standards. The distances are a San Diego stalwart and this group could use that advantage. The old prom problem on this Saturday evening rears its head, with many favoring an early finish to the competition.

Everyone looked forward to the close of Monique Henderson's day here, with the Morse star receiving the baton back in eighth place on the anchor while Rancho Buena Vista and Rancho Bernardo battled up front.  Henderson blazed past most of those in front of her as she completed a 51.8 leg and brought her team to a state qualifying spot.  When asked afterwards if her team needed a win for the title could she have done it she replied, "I don't know, I was about all out at what I had done.  I looked up on the straightaway and the girl in second had pretty good speed, so I kind of settled in and placed third for us."  What a day 51.31 - 11.88 - 23.70 and 51.8 for a relay leg--the best prep day ever of sprinting!!!

How many people have brought home an award from the State Cross-Country Meet and from a Section or possibly State Track Meet in a weight event at anytime???

Once underway it was Jimmy Ungricht of Fallbrook who did the early pace-setting, racing through the 200 in 26.8 and the 400 in 55.6 with 1600 winner (see below) Evan Fox on his shoulder. Over the final 250 meters (600 at 1:24.7) it became very interesting, with Sean Ricketts launching a furious sprint that took him by everyone and to the win in a State leading 1:52.69. Jared Emmons of Vista was next at 1:53.13, with Aaron Powell of Vista at 1:53.16. Rico Cueva 1:53.69 and Jimmy Ungricht of Fallbrook 1:53.97 will sit at home, wishing the "at-large" going to the state meet started this year instead of next.
