Minutes of 1/24/01 SCVAL Pre-Season Track Meeting

Attendees

All schools in the SCVAL had a coach at the meeting except Fremont, Homestead, and Los Gatos. Lee Volta, the athletic director in charge of track for the SCVAL, attended the meeting.

The meeting was held at Harry’s Hofbrau in Mt.View and lasted from 4PM to 5:30PM.

2001 Track Meets

All attendees were given handouts listing the SCVAL schedule and various invitational meets for 2001.

Revised By-Laws

All attendees were given a copy of our revised by-laws. These by-laws were approved by the SCVAL Board of Managers after our last track meeting.

State Meet At-Large Standards

All attendees were given a copy of the standards that must be met in order to qualify as an at-large entrant to the 2001 state track meet.

Help at Dual Meets

Based upon a concern for safety and fairness, all coaches at the meeting expressed a desire that if at all possible that adult help should be provided at dual meets rather than student help.

North Qualifying Meet For The CCS

This meet will be held on Saturday, 5/12/01, at Los Gatos high school. The SCVAL must run the high jump, the triple jump and the discus at this meet in addition to providing 4 judges for the finish line or as lane judges. We agreed that the following schools would provide help at the North Meet:

High Jump -- Gunn

Triple Jump -- Cupertino

Discus -- St Francis

However, Palo Alto, Lynbrook, and Los Altos agreed to assist the prime director with this event. If anyone recalls who will be the prime director of this event, please notify Walt Van Zant.

Lane Judges/Finish Line Judges -- The schools that will provide help for these jobs include Wilcox, Saratoga, Mt. View, and Santa Clara. Monta Vista will provide a backup judge.

CCS Semi-Finals Meet

This meet will be held on Saturday, 5/19/01, at San Jose City College. If the re-surfacing of the SJCC has not been completed by that date, the meet will be held at Los Gatos high school. The SCVAL is responsible for running the high jump and providing 2 turn judges. We agreed that the following schools would provide help as follows at the semi-finals:

High Jump -- Gunn with help from Palo Alto

Turn Judges -- Six schools will split the duties with each

covering 1/3 of the meet. These schools

include Santa Clara, Mt. View, St.Francis,

Wilcox, Milpitas, and Monta Vista.

CCS Finals Meet

This meet will be held on Friday, 5/25/01, at San Jose City College. If the re-surfacing of the SJCC has not been completed by that date, the meet will be held at Los Gatos high school. The SCVAL is responsible for running the high jump and providing 2 turn judges. The same schools that agreed to provide help for the semi-finals, will perform the same duties for the finals.

Listing of Dual Meet Results on the Lynbrook Web Site

Last year the complete results for all El Camino division dual meets and the scores of the DeAnza division dual meets were listed on the Lynbrook web site. We agreed that this year that we would list just the dual meet scores for both divisions. All coaches should give the scores of the dual meets for all divisions to Hank Lawson of Lynbrook within 48 hours of the meet.

California Coaches Alliance

The Alliance will hold a meeting at Mt SAC on 1/27/01. The coaches at our meeting noted that they agreed with the new flexibility rule regarding the determining of division splits for XC as long as we did not have the move-up rule. Also, the group stated that they thought that the at-large standards for qualifying for the State XC meet should be stiffened.

Homestead High School

Homestead is scheduled to direct the El Camino league finals. Based upon records going back to 1993, Homestead has never directed any league finals. The coaches hope that they will do so this year.

Post-Season Track Meeting

The post-season meeting will be held at 4PM on Monday, 6/4/01, at a site to be determined. We may hold it at the Round Table on El Camino near Grant Rd as they have a meeting room.

Re-Alignment of Leagues

We will discuss this subject at our post-season meeting. This will be the second to last season for St.Francis in our league. Lee Volta suggested that we consider putting teams into the strong league/weak league based upon strength of school districts rather than strength of individual schools.

DeAnza League Finals

Palo Alto will direct the league finals. The trials and finals will be held at DeAnza College on 5/1 and 5/3. Chores will be handled as follows:

HJ -- Gunn

LJ -- Wilcox

TJ -- St.Francis

Shot Put -- Los Altos

Discus -- Lynbrook

Hurdles -- Saratoga

Scoring -- Gunn

Turn Judges & Timers -- Each school will provide 2 except

Los Gatos will provide 4 and Gunn

none.

Paul Jones of Palo Alto will take care of all of the other minor details.

Paul said that the seeding meeting will be held in Rm 21 of the Tower Bldg at Palo Alto high school, beginning at 9AM on Saturday, 4/28/01. All schools should submit their entries for the league meet to him by Tuesday, 4/24/01. There was a rumor circulating after the meeting that Paul would treat us to a lavish lunch at a local restaurant after the meeting.

Gunn is scheduled to direct the 2002 league finals.

El Camino League Finals

Homestead will direct the league finals. The trials and finals will be held at Santa Clara high school on 4/30 and 5/2. Chores will be handled as follows:

Scorer - Mtn View

LJ - Mtn View

Finish - Fremont

TJ - Cupertino

HJ - Monta Vista

Disc - Milpitas

Shot - SC

Announcer - SC (maybe)

Starter/Recall Official - SC

Gate admission - SC (will look into it)

Hurdle Crew - Homestead

Lane Judges - Homestead

Timer - Homestead

Clerk - Homestead

Program - Homestead (Trials & Finals)

Seeding - Homestead

Results - Homestead (Trials & Finals)

(changes are allowed until 4:30 on 4/27)

Santa Clara is scheduled to direct the 2002 league finals.

Walt Van Zant

Note:

I talked with the AD at Homestead and the former AD at Fremont. Both have been trying to get coaches for their teams but neither has had any luck as of 01/29/01. There is the possibility that neither school will have a track team this year. Neither has come up with a drop dead date (although March 1st would be a good one). Even if Homestead were to find a coach, the AD assures me that there is NO WAY that coach would be able to put on the League meet so backup plans must be put into place. Please e-mail me, and each other, for the additional responsibilities that everyone is willing to take on. Schools that compete against Homestead/Fremont would now have a bye for that week. I would suggest looking at the DAL league and see who has a meet against SF the day that you would now have a bye. You might be able to arrange a meet for your guys (since the SF meet is a girls only meet). Start setting up alternate meet plans now for it is likely that the El Camino will only have a 4 meet schedule.
