National best
Sacred Heart Cathedral's Shannon Rowbury is enjoying another
outstanding season. Rowbury, the defending Central Coast Section
champion in the 800 meters, ran a national-best time of 2:08.52 in the
800 at the Arcadia meet April 14. Her time is five seconds faster than
anyone else in the CCS.
Rowbury also placed second in the 1,500 meters at last Saturday's
Mt. Sac relays, competing in a field that included top athletes from
China and Mexico. Her time of 4:30.28 puts her third nationally. And
Rowbury is ranked second nationally in the 3,000 meters with a
10:01.04.
Mt. SAC update
The Los Gatos boys distance medley relay team -- Russ Martin in
the 1,200, Jeff Hoeft in the 400, Tomas Viramontes in the 800
and Matt Bates in the 1,600 -- placed first at last Saturday's event
with a time of 10:12.09, the third-best time in the nation and tops in
the state.
Mt. Pleasant's Undine Becker placed second in the 300-meter low
hurdles behind Tiffany Brown of Stockdale-Bakersfield. Becker's
time of 43.67 is No. 1 in the CCS. Becker also finished third in the
100-meter hurdles with a 14.05.
Bill Kearney Invitational
Some of the highlights included a fine performance by Alvarez senior
Derek Jones, who placed first in the 100 meters, 200 meters, triple
jump and long jump. Jones' time of 22.03 in the 200 was the best in
the section this season. . . . Hollister's Elzunia Wojcicka won the
100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the long
jump, setting meet records in two events. Her time of 14.61 in the
100-meter hurdles broke the record set by Monterey's Sani Roseby
(14.86) in 1999, and her jump of 18 feet, 4 3/4 inches broke
Enterprise's Macklin Harris' 1998 mark of 18-3 1/2.
