Westmont, Saratoga run to wins at Hampton-Phillips Classic
By Dick Sparrer
The sun came out Saturday after a couple of wet, dreary days in the Santa Clara Valley.
But the sun wasn't all that was shining on Saturday over at Silver Creek High School in the Evergreen area--so were Brandon Mazikowski and Gareth Gorman of Westmont and David Cheng of Saratoga.
The three each nailed victories in the annual Hampton-Phillips Classic track and field meet.
Mazikowski and Gorman led a solid Westmont showing at the prestigious meet. Each of them won an event to top a list of four Westmont placers at Silver Creek.
Mazikowski raced to a win in the 110-meter high hurdles. The senior ran 15.41 to top the Saturday field.
Gorman, a three-sport star for the Warriors, tossed the discus 153-4 for a Westmont win. The junior also plays football and is a standout wrestler for the Warriors.
Chris Aimonetti and Kyle Dietrick each finished third for the Warriors at the Saturday meet. Aimonetti, another junior who starred last fall for the Westmont football team, heaved the discus 137-1 for a third and Dietrick sprinted to a third-place finish in the 200 meters in 23.18.
Cheng led a sensational Saratoga showing in the meet. The senior was first in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 59.09 and he was also a member of Saratoga's winning 4x400 relay team.
Cheng teamed with Jesse Alejandro, David La and Richard La for a win in the relay in 3:30.16.
The La brothers, both juniors, finished two-three in the 800-meter run. David was second in 2:00.61 for the Falcons with Richard third in 2:00.85.
Alejandro, a senior, breezed to a third in the 400 meters for the Falcons in 50.55.
Upcoming Meets
The best of the Central Coast Section track and field athletes were to compete at Los Gatos in the CCS Top-8 meet last Friday night, but Mother Nature had other ideas.
Rain washed away the Friday meet that has now been rescheduled for April 27, 5 p.m., at Los Gatos. The male and female athletes with the top eight times in the CCS are invited to compete in the meet.
Prior to the Top-8 meet, Saratoga will be home for a regular season dual meet against Palo Alto. The Falcons will host the Vikings on April 26, 3:15 p.m., in the dual meet.
The league season will come to an end in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League when the league trials and finals are held May 1 and May 3 at De Anza Community College in Cupertino. The top finishers there advance to CCS competition.
Frosh-Soph Classic
Younger area athletes starred a couple of weeks earlier in the CCS Frosh-Soph Classic hosted by Los Gatos.
There were no local winners, but a number of area athletes finished second in the field that included the section's top freshman and sophomore competitors.
Prospect's Evan Pronten heaved the discus 119-2 for a second, and teammate Austin Day raced through the 400 meters in 52.8 to tie for second. Day was also 10th in the 200 meters in 24.16 for the Panthers.
John Baumgardener of Westmont soared to a second-place finish in the long jump at 19-2 1/2.
