Local track stars shine bright at annual CCS Top-8 Classic

    By Dick Sparrer

The Central Coast Section track and field championships are still nearly a month away.

But area track fans were allowed a little peak into the future when the best athletes in the section converged on the Los Gatos track on Friday night for the annual running of the CCS Top-8 Classic.

And Westmont's James Dietrick and Ashley Mamola, Saratoga's Jesse Alejandro and Julia Stevens, and Prospect's Adina Hamulic and Anna Owens were all among the best of the best as they placed among the leaders in the prestigious event.

The CCS Top-8 meet, rained out on April 20, was rescheduled for last Friday night, and the best track and field athletes in the section turned out to compete under the lights and star-filled skies in Los Gatos.

Host Los Gatos dominated the team competition in both the boys and girls varsity divisions. The Wildcats ran up 73 points to win the boys title and came through with 87 points to take the girls crown.

Saratoga tied for ninth in the boys division and tied for 13th in the girls class.

All of the stars on Friday night weren't in the sky, though.

Lynbrook's Gleason finished among the stars with a first and a third for the Vikings. Gleason tossed the discus 133-5 for a first-place finish and heaved the shot put 38-11 1/2 third. The Lynbrook 1,600 relay later nailed an eighth in 4:22.3.

Stevens was sensational for Saratoga, nailing a second and a fifth for the Falcons. Stevens soared 5-4 in the high jump to claim a second and she flew 16-0 1/4 for fifth in the long jump. The Saratoga 400 relay added a fifth in 50.53.

Mamola placed in two events for the Westmont girls. The speedster was third in the 300-meter low hurdles in 48.74 and she added a fourth in the 100 high hurdles in 16.20.

Prospect's Owens hurled the discus 112-6 1/2 for a sixth and teammate Hamulic was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 49.65. Jenny Crawford of Prospect was eighth in the 400 meters in 61.74.

Alejandro was outstanding for the Saratoga boys at the meet. The senior raced to a third in the 400 meters in 1:56.2, and he was fourth in the 400 in 49.87.

Alejandro also teamed with David La, Richard La and David Cheng for a third in the 1,600 relay in 3:28.3 and a sixth in the 400 relay in 44.52.

    D. La ran sixth in the 400 in 1:57.9 with R. La seventh in 1:58.7, and Cheng was eighth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.21. Alexi Sevastopoulos came through with a seventh in the high jump at 6-0 for the Falcons.

Dietrick topped a list of four Westmont placers in the Top-8 meet.

Dietrick was fifth in the 100 in 11.37 and fifth in the 200 in 22.65 for the Warriors.

Brandon Mazikowski romped to a sixth in the 100 high hurdles in 15.50, and Gareth Gorman tossed the discus 147-0 for a fifth.

In the boys CCS Top-8 frosh-soph division, Prospect's Austin Day raced to a first-place finish in the 400 meters in 51.92 and he also breezed to a fifth in the 200 in 23.85. Teammate Evan Pronten supported with a second-place finish, tossing the discus 132-2.

Chris Deal of Lynbrook soared 38-10 1/2 to finish fifth in the triple jump and teammate Durell Roberts was eighth in the 200 in 24.50.

Conway Teng of Saratoga finished seventh in the 800 in 2:08.0.
