Field Event Summaries

Boys Field Events

High Jump

Simple event, with 6-07 to go to the Finals. Everyone who made that height will jump on Saturday, with luckily nine folks over there. Brandon Coleman (Vallejo) and Gentry Goode (Caruthers) made it interesting with third attempt clearances. Eugene Hutchinson (Desert, Edwards, SS) was clean throughout the entire competition 6-3, 6-5, and 6-7, with everyone else interestingly at least one miss along the way somewhere. 7-footers T.J. Fakahinde (Eastside Christian, Yorba Linda), absent Keno White (Rancho Bernardo), and 6-10er Lance Soderberg (Centennial, Corona) were the main prelim losses.

Pole Vault

Eight qualified at 15-04, with a jump-off between Josh Malmuth (Torrey Pines), Roy Phelps (Coalinga), David Cadina (King City), and Adrian Ruark (Pt. Loma), who were tied at 14-10. At 15-04 in the jump-off Phelps and Ruark cleared, so they went to 15-07, where they both missed their one attempt. Back to 15-04 and Ruark cleared to go to Saturday. 15-04 is a very respectable height in qualifying, probably equal to the highest ever to move to Saturday at State. 14-04 was the opening height, wow, with eight no-heights, almost 1/3 of the group!

Long Jump

Some good jumping! Danny Dasupanan was 23-09.75 (wind +1.0), then 24-08.25w (+2.1), with a 23-08.25 third effort. Kellen Kennedy (Tulare) was 24-05.25w (+3.7) and limped with ankle problems after that. Rudy Burgess (Desert, Edwards) was 24-01.5 (+1.4) to lead early, with 24-00.75 and 23-07.75 back-ups!! Demitrius Ragland (Tulare Western) was 24-00.5w (+2.2) (23-09.5 +1.3) with Ronald Hill (Walnut) the 5th over 24-00 (!!!) with a 24-00.5w (+2.1). Five over 24-00 in qualifying!!!

Triple Jump

Some more good Friday action here!! Demitrius Ragland (Tulare Western) was 50-05.75 (+1.8) on his opener to lead, with Nathan Atkins (Cerritos) 49-08.25 earlier (and a 50-05 +1.5) second effort! Solomon Welch (St. Mary’s, Berkeley) was 48-09.25w (+2.2) then he passed his next two. 6-11 John Muir of Pasadena basketballer Ryan Hollins was 48-01.25 (+1.0) for fourth with a personal best.

Shot Put

Adam Trafalis (Mills, Millbrae) was 61-00.75 to lead the Shot Put during the third grouping of athletes, with Noah Bryant (Carpinteria) taking the lead at 62-02, then passing. Ryan Davis (Saugus) threw 60-03.25 on his second toss, with Trafalis next at 61-06.5. Jon Howard (Arroyo Grande) was 59-06.75 on his third toss for fourth.

Soph Jason Rooters (Edison, Fresno) was second today at 176-11, with teammate Jon Chreitien 174-05 in third. Brian Ruziecki (Huntington Beach) was 4th at 174-02, Justin Grasmeyer (Valley Christian, Cerritos) 171-01 in 5th, with Adam Trafalis (Mills) 6th at 170-03.

Girls Field Events

High Jump

Eight jumpers were over 5-05 to kind of sort it out, with Shalane Gutierrez, Christine Harms, Kate Bartkenweks, Rachel Schaffner, and Sharie Joest in "jump-off" time after their 5-03 clearances. At 5-05 only Joest cleared to sort it all out and be the ninth qualifier. 6-footers Chaunte Howard and Kaylene Wagner will continue their rivalry Saturday with good company along!!

Pole Vault

History was made with 12-00 taken to qualify for the Finals. Wow!!! There are probably less than ten states nationally where the winning mark is 12-00 or better. Golden Staters lead the nation in this event!!! With that good a level of vaulting someone had to be left behind, with 12-03 Michelle Rivera (Birmingham) among the top 15 in the entire nation not able to vault Saturday off her 11-06 clearance in qualifying. Hopes are for some good consistent wind conditions for Saturday with the big crowd capable of lifting folks to some great heights.

Long Jump

Southern Section jumpers make up seven of the nine finalists, with Sparkle Anderson (Serra, SD) and Maxine Marlow (Centennial, Bakersfield) shutting out the north. Lena Bettis (North, Riverside) was 19-10w (+3.1) to lead, with area rival Gayle Hunter (King, Riverside) 19-07w (+3.3), with five over 19-02.25 to set up a potentially great competition Saturday.

Triple Jump

Michelle Sanford (Woodbridge) stretched it out to 42-01.25 (+2.0 wind legal) to finish off the competition on her second jump. Rival Chaunte Howard (North, Riverside) was 40-00.25 and 40-05 (+1.8) for second, with Sparkle Anderson (name of the year by the way) 40-01.75 (+1.9) for the next spot. Big pr for Brittany Daniels (West, Tracy) 39-11.75 (+1.2) for fourth. This could be as good a depth as ever in the State meet with a good Saturday! Improvement of the year goes to Artensia Young (Westchester, LA) who came in at 36-04 and powered out to 39-09w (+2.2) here for 5th!!!

Shot Put

Pretty true to form, with the last seven entrants listed (best 7 marks from their Section meet) all qualifying, led by Kamaiya Warren (St. Mary’s, Berkeley) 47-01.5. Down the list San Diego stars Aigamarie Taumura (Sweetwater) (43-02.75) and Carrie Johnson (Fallbrook) (44-00.75) were the other two. Jessica Pressley was second here at 46-05, with Rachel Varner 46-02.25. Another good one Saturday!!

Discus

Another strong group, with Billie Joe Grant (Arroyo Grande) 167-10 opener, then 164-00 second throw, both better than anyone else this day! Rachel Varner (Bakersfield) 159-05 and Kamaiya Warren (St. Mary’s) 155-02 also over 150 feet. Another good finals field!
