Follmar wins on the track and in the field for Saratoga

It's called track and field. And Saratoga junior Alicia Follmar proved she's a winner in both when she won two events on the track and one in the field last week to lead Saratoga to a 68-28 dual meet win over Homestead.

Follmar raced to a win in the 800 meters in 2:15 and she romped to a first in the 3,200 meters in 12:50 to pace Saratoga to a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division win over the Mustangs.

As if that wasn't enough, the talented junior came back to win the high jump with a 5-0 effort. She was the only Falcon to win a field event in the meet.

But she wasn't along as a track winner. Saratoga dominated the running events in the meet. Gwen Belomy took the 400 in 66.1 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 50.7, and Lauren Belomy won the 1,600 meters in 5:49.

Jordana Dreyfuss sprinted to a victory in the 200 meters in 27.8, and the Falcons won both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

It was just about the same story in the boys division. The Falcons won just one event in the field, but they took eight wins on the track on the way to a 68-59 win over the Mustangs.

Sophomore Ken Douglas and senior Will Alleshouse led the Falcons to the team win with two victories apiece.

Douglas was first in the 1,600 in 4:50 and the 800 in 2:08, and Alleshouse took the 400 in 52.5 and the 200 in 23.3.

Byron Wong and Nicholas Chien won the hurdle events for Saratoga. Wong took the 110 highs in 18.2 and Chien took the 300 intermediates in 44.5.

Hair Subramaniam was a winner in the 3,200 meters in 10:33, and the Falcons took the 4x400 relay in 3:44.

Sean Bromage was the only field event winner for the Saratoga boys. He was first in the high jump at 5-4.

Golfers win two

Matt Marshall and Shaun Pienkos shared medalist honors last week to lead the Saratoga boys golf team to back-to-back wins over Los Gatos and Milpitas in El Camino Division play.

Marshall fired even par with a 34 at the La Rinconada Country Club to lead the Falcons to a 180-188 win over Los Gatos in the battle of the league's two unbeaten teams.

Pienkos came back with a 1-over par 37 at Summit Pointe in a 209-244 win over Milpitas later in the week. The win helped the Falcons improve to 5-0 in league action.

Tennis nets wins

If not for a single match loss against Mountain View last week, it would have been a clean sweep for the Saratoga boys tennis team.

The Falcons outlasted Mountain View 6-1 in a De Anza Division match to open the week, then blanked Lynbrook 7-0 in league action and Sacred Heart Prep 7-0 in a non-league match.

A.J. Kerin won at No. 1 singles in each of the three matches to lead the Falcons to the victories.

Saratoga improved to 5-0 in the division with the wins over the Spartans and Vikings, then moved to 13-0 for the year with the win over Sacred Heart.

A week earlier it was more of the same for the Falcons.

Kerin won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to start Saratoga on the road to a 7-0 win over Gunn, and Kerin won 6-1, 6-2 in a 6-1 win over Palo Alto.

Singles standouts Kevin Kaiser at No. 2, Jeff Gast at No. 3 and Ravi Raghavan at No. 4 have been winning key matches for the Falcons along with the doubles players Scott Juang, Jason Daniel, Albert Chiang, Jeff Hathaway, Brent Fong, David Lee and Jon Ng.
