Follmar wins at qualifier, set for CCS finals
By Dick Sparrer
She hasn't won anything yet, but when Saratoga's Alicia Follmar raced to a couple of victories at the Central Coast Section qualifying meet last week, she certainly delivered a strong message of what could come at the CCS finals this week.

Follmar won both the 1,600- and 800-meter events at the May 22 semifinals to qualify for the May 28 finals at San Jose City College. Field events begin at 4 p.m. with running events to start at 6 p.m.

Follmar may have given an indication of what to expect on Friday night with her performance last Saturday on the City track. The junior ran away from the field in the 1,600. Her winning time of 4:56.94 was nearly three seconds better than the second-place time of 4:59.92 posted by Ciara Viehweg of St. Ignatius.

Follmar had a tougher time in the 800, winning at the wire against Live Oak's Christine Jones. Follmar took the 800 in 2:12.34 with Jones hot on her heels in second at 2:12.50.

Follmar will be joined at the CCS finals by teammate Tom Cummins, who qualified in the discus by finishing sixth with a throw of 153-9.

Lynbrook, meanwhile, will send a large contingent to CCS, led by quarter-miler Taimur Khan and freshman distance standout MayC Huang.

Khan raced to a win in the 400 at the qualifier, running 49.00 for first. He holds the Lynbrook school record in the event at 48.68.

Khan also qualified along with teammate Durrell Roberts in the 200 and in both relays. Roberts was sixth in the 200 in 22.48 with Kahn eighth in 22.59. The two were also members of the 4x100 relay that finished first in 42.42 and the 4x400 relay that was fourth in 3:25.71.

Chris Deal will also make the trip to the CCS finals after finishing fifth in the triple jump in 45-8 at the qualifier.

Huang was sixth in the 3,200 meters in 11:18.67 and seventh in the 1,600 in 5:06.86 to win her ticket to the finals. Teammate Julie Chen ran fifth in the 100 hurdles in 15.85 to qualify.

Rounding out the list of locals advancing to the section is Westmont senior Amanda Horowitz, who was fifth in the shot put at 38-1.
