Top 8 Meet: Brother's victories inspire Pioneer distance runner - San Jose Mercury News

Pioneer High's Weston Strum had watched his fraternal twin Nathan win the 1,600- and 800-meter races, and he wanted to make a mark of his own at the 31st annual Top 8 Track and Field Classic.

Usually a 1,600-meter runner, Weston was running the 3,200 Friday night at Los Gatos High. He came through with a personal best, setting a meet record with a time of 8:59.50, beating the previous mark of 9:01.80 set by Palo Alto's Mike McCollum in 1981.

"Watching Nathan win motivated me to run well," said Weston, headed to Loyola Marymount on a track scholarship. "I knew they were going to go out fast, and my plan was to stay behind and make my move on the last lap. I decided to start pushing it on the sixth lap, and it worked out well."

Palo Alto's Philip MacQuitty was second in 9:16.06.

Weston said he had planned to focus on the 1,600 for the Central Coast Section meet but now will consider his options.

Nathan Strum entered with the goal of setting a meet record in the 1,600.

A slow first lap prevented the UC Davis-bound senior from breaking the mark, but he won the race going away with a blistering 61-second final lap to beat Bellarmine College Prep junior Kyle Rae. Strum's time of 4:14.98 was more than two seconds behind the record Los Gatos' Matt Bates set in 2001.

Strum made his move over the final two laps, opening a lead of about 40 yards on Rae (4:22.22).

Strum wasn't planning on running the 800, which he won last year in the CCS meet. But after the disappointment of not setting the 1,600 record, he decided to run the 800.

Strum ran with confidence in the front of the pack and won another gold medal with a time of 1:53.41.

"It was kind of tough running in front by myself in the 1,600," Strum said. "It's easier for me to turn it on when I'm chasing someone. I was a little upset with myself. I decided to run the 800, not really worrying about my time, but just trying to win the race."

On the girls side, Leland's Katie Nelms won the 100 hurdles (14.29 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (43.90).

In the 100, the Stanford-bound Nelms came from behind early to beat Mt. Pleasant's Shanique Walker (14.31).

In the girls 200 meters, two talented sophomores battled it out with Wilcox's Iesha Hardiman (24.87) beating Hill's Asheley Bamberg (25.30). Bamberg also took second in the 400 in a tight race with Leigh sophomore Sarah Cline (57.17), who won by three-hundredths of a second.

In the boys 400, Bellarmine junior Andre Chapman set a school record with a time of 48.60 to edge San Benito's Jason Roascio (48.63). Roascio, a junior, returned the favor by taking the 200 (22.03), with Bellarmine's Justin Montgomery (22.14) and Chapman (22.15) close behind.

In the boys 100, Valley Christian sophomore Byron Marshall won with a time of 10.85 to beat St. Francis senior Glyn Borel (10.93).

"I kind of stumbled out of the blocks and had to go after Glyn," Marshall said. He caught him at about the 80-meter mark.

Cupertino senior Ryo Kubozono finished third in the 110 hurdles and came back to win the 300 hurdles with a time of 40.27.

Leigh's Melissa Hopper won the 800 with a time of 2:15.08, holding off a game effort from Valley Christian's Jenna Davis (2:15.54).
