High school roundup: CCS Top 8 track and field meet lives up to billing with numerous personal bests By Glenn Reeves Mercury News Posted: 04/20/2012 10:24:31 PM PDT Updated: 04/20/2012 10:46:08 PM PDT The warm weather and a fast track at San Jose City College contributed to a number of outstanding times turned in Friday at the Central Coast Section Top 8 meet. Valley Christian's Sean Davis, the CCS leader in the 800 meters, won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 13.51 seconds, holding off a spirited final-lap challenge from Milpitas' Yohaness Estifanos, who finished in 4:13.81. Davis' previous best was 4:17.43. Estifanos' previous fastest time was 4:21.22. "He gave me a run for the money," said Davis, a senior who committed Tuesday to run for UCLA. "I have a lot of respect for him." After lowering his personal-best time by nearly eight seconds in the 1,600, Estifanos came back in the last open running event of the day to win the 3,200 in an unofficial time of 9:07.8, more than 13 seconds faster than his previous PR of 9:21.20. Davis still plans on concentrating on the 800 at CCS and at the state meet. He ran 1:52.39 in the 800 at the Arcadia Invitational. "I know I'm in good shape and know I can go faster," Davis said. "When I set goals I set them high. I want to run 1:49 and win state. I know that's lofty. But when I was at UCLA I was talking to Cory Primm (one of the top 800 runners in the U.S.). He said if I go out in 53 (for the first 400) I can come back in 56 (for the second 400)." Prospect junior Kamara Biawogi was a double winner, taking the 110 high hurdles (14.54 seconds) and 300 intermediate hurdles (38.20). Both were significant improvements over his previous best times this season of 14.74 and 39.51. "I want to run low 14s by the end of the season," Biawogi said. "I might've done it today if I hadn't hit the last three hurdles with my trail leg." Both of Biawogi's times were the best in the CCS so far this season. Wilcox sophomore Marisa Kwiatkowski enjoyed a huge two-foot improvement to win the girls triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 9 inches. "She's talented and has a very good feel for the event," Wilcox coach Mike Buncic said. "She's one of the easiest athletes you'd ever want to work with." Leigh senior Sarah Cline was also a double winner in the 100 and 200. Her 100 time of 11.95 put her in the CCS all-time top 10 list, a satisfying achievement after she suffered an injury that curtailed her season as a junior. She also ran a personal-best of 24.38 in the 200. Bellarmine's 400 relay team of Tim Crawley, Joey Colucci, Nikolai Makarov and Joey Sanfilippo clocked a season-best 42.04 to take first place. Presentation sophomore Taylore Jaques won the pole vault at 13-0. It was the third time this season she has cleared 13-0, which is the best mark in the state. "With her speed she should break the national record of 14-2 before she's done," said Presentation coach Warren Jaques, her father and a former 15-foot pole vaulter at Del Mar. Homestead senior Rachel Bolton, Jaques' training partner, took second at 12-6. Earlier, Bolton accepted a scholarship offer from Oklahoma.
