Track and field: Valley Christian's Elena Bruckner sets CCS discus record at Top 8 meet - Varsity Extra

FullSizeRender (12) Valley Christian’s Elena Bruckner threw the discus 186 feet, 10 inches on her first throw of the day at the CCS Top 8 meet Friday at Los Gatos High.

That throw was a new CCS record and the fourth-best mark in high school history.

A perfect throw? Not at all, according to Bruckner.

“It was still a really low throw,” she said. “I would have liked to have more lift on it.”

Her previous best in the discus was 182-8, the 10th-best throw in U.S. prep history.

She also won the shot put at 52-10. She set new Top 8 records in each event, breaking her own marks from last year.

Her best in the shot put is 53-5 1/2, which is 11th on the all-time list.

“If I can hit 55 I’ll be number two,” she said. “I know I can do it if I just do the same thing I did in the discus, relax and don’t over-think.”

Mt. Pleasant’s Darius Carbin cleared 7-0 to win the high jump and came close to clearing 7-2.

“I felt I was really close,” he said. “I was really high but my lower body, my legs knocked it down.”

It was Carbin’s first time over 7-0 this outdoor season. He cleared 7-1 3/4 indoors.

Silver Creek freshman Jazlynn Shearer won the 100 hurdles in 14.48 seconds.

“I’d like to get down to 14.0 or into the 13s,” she said. “I need to work on my start.”

Her teammate, sophomore Arianna Fisher, had a huge personal-best effort to win the girls triple jump at 38-4. Her previous best mark in the event was 36-1.

“For her the sky is the limit,” Silver Creek coach Hector Flores said. “Today was her breakout day. She went 37-5, then 38-4. She’s a three-sport athlete, hasn’t had the time to be on club teams. She definitely has the ability to go 40.”

Gunn’s Maya Miklos won the girls 400 in 55.56, just missing the Top 8 record of 55.55, set last year by Wilcox’s D’airrean Jackson.

“I have a lot more strength to draw on and that makes it easier at the end of the race,” Milkos said. “I think I’m just starting to crack what I can do in the 400.”

Miklos, a two-time CCS champion in the 300 hurdles, did not take part in that event.

Palo Alto’s Eli Givens was a double winner in the 100 (10.95) and the 200 (21.99).

Givens, who is headed to Southern Utah to play football, won both those events and the long jump at last year’s CCS finals.

“Last year at CCS finals I weighed 174,” he said. “This year I weighed 210 going into track. I wanted to get bigger for football. I probably weigh 200 now. I had to learn how to run with this weight.”

The Bellarmine 4×100 relay team ran a season-best 42.11 despite being without Kyle Macauley, who injured a hamstring earlier in the week. Sophomore Cole Corsiglia took Macauley’s place and ran the leadoff leg. He was followed by Earvin Da Silva, Devin Buenrostro and Troy Martig.

“Their handoffs were just excellent,” Bellarmine sprints coach Dan Burke said. “They executed well. When Kyle Macauley comes back we could break the school record of 41.56.”

Serra’s Armon Plummer, the son of former Golden State Warrior Gary Plummer, lowered his season-best time in winning the 400 in 49.58.

Lynbrook’s Justin Robison won the 3,200 in 9:18.54, running down Sobrato’s Nolan Dozier (9:19.48) on the final lap after Dozier took the lead at the beginning of the gun lap.

Cupertino’s Jade Harrison was a double winner in the girls 100 (12.40) and 200 (24.78).

Caice Lanovaz went a personal-best 19-6 to win the girls long jump.
