RE: Recommendations from Coaches Committee on Cross Country
FROM: Hal Sonntag, Commissioner of Athletics
On July 18, 1963 Verne Thornberg, SCVAL: Ray Dyer and Jr Morgan, WVAL and
Charles Sullivan, MHAL held a meeting in this office in order to discuss rules
and regulations regarding the Cross Country program.
Their recommendations are as follows:
1. Items in the Constitution listed under "Cross Country" remain as is.
2. Teams:
a. There will be four teams, namely: Varsity, Junior Varsity, Sophomore and Freshman.
b. The following rules will effect the Varsity team:
1. The varsity team, in order to score in the championships,
must have at least five and not more than seven runners.
2. If a school enters a team other than the freshman or sophomore team in the
championships, it must enter a varsity team before it may enter a junior varsity team.
c. The following rules will effect the junior varsity team.
1. The junior varsity team, in order to score in the championships,
must have at least five and not more than ten runners.
2. Runners in the Junior varsity league championships
can not run in the Varsity Championships.
d. The following rules will effect the Sophomore teams.
1. The sophomore team, in order to score in the championships,
must have at least five and not more than ten.
2. Sophomores can run on the varsity team during the season
and return to this class for the championships.
3. Sophomores can NOT run on the Junior Varsity during the year
and return to this class for the championships.
4. Sophomores may return to the Varsity team championships after their
class championships, but can not run in the junior varsity championships.
e. The following rules will effect the Freshman team.
1. The Freshman team, in order to score in the championships, must
have at least five and not more than ten runners.
2. Freshman can run on the Freshman and Varsity teams during the season
and return to this class for the league chmpionships.
3. Freshman can NOT run on the Sophomore, or Junior varsity teams during
the year and return to this class for the championships.
4. Freshman may return to the Varsity championships after their class
championships, but can not run in the Junior Varsity Championships.
f. The number of entries in meets other than the championships will be
determined by the home coach or officials of the meet.
3. Medals:
a. Medals will be awarded to the top ten places in the Varsity,
Sophomore and Freshmen classes in the League Championships.
b. No medals will be awarded in the Junior Varsity Division.
4. Apparel:
a. All members of a team will have the same running uniforms.
Each team from a school may have a different running uniform,
but all members within that team must wear the same running
uniform. Anyone with a different running uniform from that
of his teammates will be disqualified.
b. The question of wearing spikes was left undecided.
At a meeting of coaches on September 13, 1963 it was agreed
that spikes would not be worn by cross country runners. This does
not pertain to postal meets. Since this is not an official ruling
runners may use spikes at the N.C.S. meet if they are allowed by
the meet manager.
The items listed above are recommendations and are submitted for your consideration.
It will be the responsibility of each league chairman to hold a meeting to discuss
these regulations thoroughly before submitting some to the Department Heads and the
Board of Managers for their approval.
