More than 700 athletes from 50 Northern California high schools competed in yesterday's Richard Knox Memorial cross country invitational meet at Modesto's Legion Park. Top individual varsity performer was Robert Yzlas of Madera High, who paced his team from sixth to second with a 9:18 two-mile leg. Defending champion Pleasant Hills High, coached by former Modestan Bo McGuire, captured the varsity team race. Downey Sophs Downey's sophomores took first place. Running for Coach Ed Maurice's champs were Tommy Torvend, Andy Potochnik, Joe Yohan, Hal Bright and John Ritter. Modesto High was second in the junior team race. Grace Davis placed fifth in the varsity competition. Mickey Miramonte, former Modesto High and MJC athlete, won the coaches award for the best four team showing. Knox in whose memory the meet is held was Downey's first cross country coach.
