The 1998 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)/Sac- Joaquin Section
(Section) Cross Country Championships were held at Sierra College (Rocklin) on
November 13. Under ideal conditions (clear skies and temperatures in the 55-
65 degree Fahrenheit range), the top harriers in the Section competed on the
challenging three mile course to earn spots at the CIF State Cross Country
Championships (CIF State Championships). The CIF State Championships are
scheduled for Woodward Park (Fresno) on, Saturday, November 28. In order to
qualify to the CIF State Championships in each division, athletes must either
be a member of the top two (2) teams or be one (1) of the top five (5)
individuals not members of those top two (2) teams and finish in the top
twelve (12) overall in their respective races. In the following race
summaries, an (I) after an athlete s name indicates their qualification to the
CIF State Championships as an individual, while a (T) indicates their
qualification as a member of qualifying team.
Division I (School Enrollment for Grades 10-12 of 1,533 and above
Atwater senior Christine Llorente raced to her first Section championship
capturing the girl s title in a strong 18:32. Freshman Tracy Compton finished
second in 18:49 leading her Nevada Union (Grass Valley) teammates to their
first ever team title and the fastest team time of the day at 98:23. Two-time
defending Section champions Lincoln (Stockton) finished a valiant second
although recording a faster team time than their victorious teams of 1996 and
1997. The boy s race was one of the closest individual competitions of the
day with senior Justin Willingham (Beyer, Modesto)(1600 meters-4:13.3 [1997])
, the 1997 CIF State Division III champion (while at East Union, Manteca),
using a furious kick over the last 300 meters to edge senior Mike Gregg
(Nevada Union, Grass Valley), the defending champion, in 15:33 to 15:35.
Willingham s first place finish led his Beyer (Modesto) team to victory over a
surprising Davis squad led by senior Andrew Dougherty s third place finish in
15:57.

Division II (School Enrollment for Grades 10-12 of 1,217 - 1,532)
Junior Jamie Witt (Folsom) raced to the fastest time of day (17:57) in
capturing her third Section individual championship. She was the Section
individual champion for Division III in 1996 and 1997. Diminutive freshman
Kelly Dahl (Wood, Vacaville) was in hot pursuit for most of the race, loosing
ground in the last 1200 meters to finish second in 18:07. Despite the loss of
their number one and two runners to nagging injuries (senior track All-
American Lindsay Hyatt [800 meters-2:06.30, 1600 meters- 4:48.62]and junior
Randi Fee [1600 meters-5:10.28]), the Placer (Auburn) Hillgals came through
with their fourth consecutive Section championship. Senior Melinda Fuller led
the team to the championship with her seventh place finish in 19:16. Oakridge
(El Dorado Hills) finished second with seniors Christina Jamison (tenth-
19:43) and Priscilla Moreno (twelfth-19:49 [in a gutsy performance]) leading
the way. In the boy s race Golden Valley (Merced) senior Enrique Rodriguez
captured his first individual Section championship with a close three second
victory over surprising Martel Mungua (Woodcreek, Roseville) with a winning
time of 15:57. Perennial power Jesuit (Carmichael) raced to their seventh
consecutive championship led by senior Chris Robertson s third place finish in
16:01. Their team time of 82:13 was the fastest of the day for all divisions.
Casa Roble (Orangevale) finished second in the team competition with good
efforts turned in by senior Nick Petronovich (fourth in 16:09) and junior
Jason Nartker (fifth in 16:13).

Division III (School Enrollment for Grades 10-12 of 908 - 1,216)
Junior Jessica Hart continued the fine tradition of Del Oro (Loomis)
harriers capturing the individual championship in 19:58. In the team
competition, St. Francis (Sacramento) junior Chloe Jarvis (two time defending
Section 400 meter champion) led her Troubadour teammates to the team
championship with her sixth place finish in 20:43, with Del Oro (Loomis)
edging Manteca (72 points to 74 points) for the second CIF State Championship
berth. Senior David Ulibarri (15:47) and his Sierra (Manteca) teammates
captured both the individual and team Section championships for the first time
at the Division III level. This was the second Section championship in the
school s five year history as they were Division IV champions in 1996. Senior
David Garcia (16:16) and junior Corey Duquette (16:34) finished second and
fourth, respectively to key the win for Sierra (Manteca). Paced by senior
Garett Anderson s third place (16:23), Sonora was a solid second with 59
points.
