Div I Boys 3 Mile Run
Some great racing took place here. Ventura junior Josh Spiker was out
quick, leading by 25 yards over a top field through the 1320 mark, with a
4:39 first mile. One kept waiting for others in the very strong field to
come after the Ventura star, with Alfonso Leon leading the chase. Spiker was
tough the entire way, shocking with his 15:01 win, a very impressive
clocking! Leon was 15:05 for a seasonal best, with Ventura's Matt Swaney
improving a minute in the last month here to 15:19!
Some great teams would battle. Long Beach Poly, 6th ranked nationally
by Harrier magazine, put together another super effort, winning with 72
points (78:52--they were 78:48 at the Mt. SAC Invite), with Santa Ana
realizing the potential it had shown earlier in the year, placing second at
89 (79:02), with Saugus 93 (79:30), and Don Lugo (Chino), starting slowly,
fourth at 108 (80:14). Yucaipa ran 80:42 (16:08 average here) and will stay
home from Fresno. Poly is amazing, the area's #1 ranked football team and
the area's #1 ranked cross-country team to go along with the other jewels in
its school's athletic program.

Div II Boys 3 Mile Run
Ranked #11 in the entire nation, Katella (Anaheim) had put together a
super season capped by big overall wins at Stanford and at the Orange County
Championships. They run four underclass runners in their top six, with a
sterling effort here that had them total 43 points (1-7-10-12-13-14) and a
strong 79:53 team time. Alex Murcio (Rubidoux, Riverside) took the race out,
leading through the mile at 4:45, with Katella junior Daniel Mejia and Augie
Escobar moving up to challenge through the swtichback loop. Mejia was strong
and eventually edged in ahead of Murcio 15:31-15:32. Newport Harbor
completed a fine local season with its second place effort, with Santiago and
Sultana the other teams on to state.

Div III Boys 3 Mile Run
The Boys Division III race featured one of the strangest starts in local
history in a championship race, with a huge pack in attendance thorugh a
pedestrian first mile of 4:59. During the switchback loop it was the leader
of the team favorites, Armando Solis (Bosco Tech, Rosemead) who atacked the
course, moving away from the field to an eventual 15:37 victory. Bosco,
ranked second in state to a steadily improving St. Francis of Mountain View
group, moved to a strong 62 point win and 81:34 team time. South Hills (West
Covina), Barstow, and La Canada will be the other Section reps to state.

Div IV Boys 3 Mile Run
Yipes, a star was born here, with Big Bear (it's up in the mountains by
Big Bear Lake--with only a cross-country team in the last few years) soph
Ryan Hall improving a minute from the Mt. SAC Invite last month to 15:39 in
the prelims last week, then racing away from some pretty good folks (4:17-
9:25 types on the track) with a 15:38 winner here. An efficient stylish
runner, Hall showed some real potential for a youngster!
The team contest featured Nordhoff, having moved to a #1 ranking
statewide recently, seeking its sixth Section title on the Boys' side since
1991. Coach Ken Reeves' Nordhoff crew had started the season off in fine
style at the Morro Bay Invite, then settled into a solid season capped by an
82:08 run with 74 points here. All the Southern Section team entries here
should be tough at State in a week.

Division I Girls
Wow was this exciting!!! Nationally ranked Esperanza (Anaheim) and
Yucaipa would lead a batch of strong teams with a result that was quite
surprising! Lauren Fleshman and Allyson Marqund are both Foot Locker
Finalists, with the twosome leading the pack through the mile at 5:24.
Esperanza had Pam Smith and Nicole Distefano with the lead pack, with Yucaipa
leader Heidi Walker up there also, so all seemed to be according to form. It
was after the field came down off of the switchback loop at a mile and a half
that things started to look a bit amiss, with Peninsula and Irvine, the
fastest team from the Prelims, appearing strongest in the team contest.
Esperanza and Yucaipa had their packs too far back to appear capable of
winning, with the challenging last mile and a half, which features two very
huge hills making anything possible one way or the other. With Southern
Section scribe Rich Gonzalez figuring the team points as they came by with
less than a quarter mile to go on the airstrip, the Irvine pack had steadily
moved up through the field, with their five scorers finishing between
twentieth and thirty-second in the raw team scoring to easily emerge the
winners with 92 points after displacement. Esperanza was second at 108, with
Thousand Oaks at 141 in third and University (Irvine) next with 152.
Peninsula had team leader, soph Breanne Sandberg, sick all week, disintegrate
over the final quarter mile, falling a ton of places to 96th overall at 21:19
(she was 18:50 here at the Mt. SAC Invite) with Penn scoring 154 to finish
fifth at 98:38. Yucaipa ended up eighth at 196 (99:41), with the top nine
teams under 100:00!
Up front Lauren Fleshman edged away to a strong 17:24 win, very
impressive as Allyson Marquand also ducked under 18:00 at 17:57.

Div II Girls 3 Mile Run
Surprisingly the sunny day had turned quite warm by time this race went
off, the ninth of ten during the morning. Seven ran under 19:00 in the
prelims a week previous during qualifying, with only four able to do that in
the warmer part of the morning this week in the Finals.
Sultana, ranked #1 statewide most of the year here, with five under
19:45 on this course, charged out with their scorers all prominent near the
front during the first mile. Lori Mann (Santa Margarita) 18:26 the previous
week was also there, with Brea-Olinda soph Jenny Thune and Woodbridge's
Jessica Kanin running strong. Through the mile and a half Sultana was still
strong, about 20 points up on defending State Champs Woodbridge after a mile
and a half. Agoura's Laura Jakosky edged up and ahead of the pack,
eventually winning over Jenny Thune 18:42- 18:49. Sultana did hold together,
winning 75-91 over Woodbridge, wtih Brea-Olinda and Santa Margarita taking
the next two spots to state over highly ranked Newport Harbor.

Div III Girls 3 Mile Run
#20 ranked nationally La Canada dominated this race from the start, just
as they did earlier in the year at the Stanford and Mt. SAC competitions
Division III. LC had four of the first eight places at the 1320, with soph
Nicole Bonino and Kim Garnic leading through the mile at 5:40. Bonino edged
away during the switchback loop, with San Luis Obispo's Ali Valle close
behind until right near the end. Bonino won 18:46-19:03, with the times
here certainly affected a bit by the heat in the day's final event. La
Canada finished with 41 points (97:45 team time 19:33 ave), with four-time
defending champion El Modena performing very strong for this level, 66
(100:02). Lompoc and South Hills will also represent the SEction at State.

Div IV Girls 3 Mile Run
A very strong group would battle here. Corona del Mar (Newport Beach),
ranked #1 statewide all Fall is very solid, with Nordhoff (Ojai), winer of
four consecutive section titles, always peaking in fine style, with St.
Joseph (Santa Maria), and a flock of others capable of quick team times at
this level.
Jamie DeNoewer (Costa Mesa), third in last year's state meet, took the
event out at 5:39 for the first mile, with three CdM girls in the top eight
at that point seeming in control of the team contest. The Nordhoff squad, in
blue and gold was not far back, with St. Joseph (green and white) having the
June sisters, Michelle and Kara, right up front. DeNoewer continued her
strong running through to the finish, racing a fine 18:52, with Michelle June
leading the team powers in second. After the dust cleared Corona del Mar had
hung on to win with 63 points (98:20), with Nordhoff winning over St. Joe on
the sixth runner after both tied at 71 (Nordhoff 98:59 and St. Joe 98:48--
tough running at this level!). Louisville, the state's #5 ranked squad at
this level, was fourth at 112 (100:48). This is another very solid group the
section is sending to Fresno.
