San Francisco Section Finals Andy Leong
The San Francisco Section (Academic Athletic Association) held its 57th annual Cross Country Championships at the Polo Fields on November 15. For the 12th time in 13 years, Lowell won the Varsity Boys’ championship. Lowell also won the Varsity Girls’ championship for the 23rd year in a row, an ongoing CIF record. Lowell senior Peter Luong and his brother junior Henry Luong took first and second place in times of 17:49 and 18:02 in the boys’ race. Sophomore Vladamir Perrales from Burton took 3rd in a time of 18:40. Lowell senior Jin Daikoku, who finished 2nd at last springs Track and Field state meet in the 1600, ended his season two weeks ago due to a knee injury. In the girls’ race, International Studies Academy senior Maja Ruznic (19:58) took first place and won her second consecutive section title. Ruznic, who is a 2:17.70 800-runner, will run in Division IV at next weeks CIF state championship. Lowell senior Michi Hirakawa-Wong took second in 20:49 and junior Lika Sasaki took third with a time of 21:09. The San Francisco runners going to the CIF championships in Fresno are Perrales (D II), McAteer senior Oscar Avila (D III), Washington junior Derek Chiu (D I), Burton senior Romanic Martinez (D II), and McAteer sophomore Emmanuel Majia (D III). The girls representing San Francisco are Ruznic, Washington senior Jillian Ruppenstein (D I), Balboa junior Sandra Calzada (D II), and Burton junior Feng Wu (D II). Representing Lowell (D I) will be seniors Dario Amodei, David Lin, Luong, Brian Quan, juniors Michael Dean, Luong, and sophomore Jonah Sinick. The Lowell runners in the girls’ D I race will be seniors Hirakawa-Wong, Lorie Delizo, juniors Sasaki, Ivy Truong, sophomore Otilia Torres, and freshmen Kelly Leong and Tracy Zhu. - Alan Herzfeld, Lowell High School Cross Country team manager
