ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

RUTH GRAHAM, GUNN

Sport: Cross-country.     Class: Junior.
Accomplishment: After collapsing halfway through the previous year's race because of dehydration, Graham won the Division II portion of the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, four days after setting the course record in the season-opening Central Park meet. Graham, who as a sophomore won the Division II CCS cross-country and two-mile track titles, set a personal record of 18:30 on the Stanford 5,000-meter course.

Comment: ``It was really important to me,'' Graham said ``It was something that haunted me since last year. It was one thing I had to finish.''

BRIAN COSGROVE, SCOTTS VALLEY

Sport: Football. Position: Receiver. Class: Junior.
Accomplishment: Cosgrove caught a Santa Cruz County record 16 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns to lead Scotts Valley from a 27-0 deficit to a 28-27 win over Soquel. Cosgrove leads the Central Coast Section in receiving with 25 catches for 365 yards in three games. Cosgrove, who is 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, also plays outside linebacker and leads the team in tackles.
Comment: ``He's our go-to-guy and everyone knows it,'' Scotts Valley Coach Louie Walters said. ``He seems to catch the ball in traffic and bounce off people. He's a throwback-type of player who never talks, he just plays hard.''
