SAN FRANCISCO SECTION FINALS - 11/14/01 - Andy Leong
Lowell winners at San Francisco
By Alan Herzfeld, Lowell Cross Country Team Manager On November 14 in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Lowell High School won the San Francisco Academic Athletic Association Cross Country championship. It was the 25th consecutive championship for Lowell in the Varsity Girls' race, and it was the 7th consecutive in the Varsity Boys' race, as well as the 14th in 15 years and the 18th in 23 years. Phillip & Sala Burton's Vladimir Parrales won the Varsity Boys' race, becoming the first ever individual champion from his school. Lowell then placed Brandon Roe second, Russell Ja third, and put five runners in the top 11 to win the race. Representing Lowell in the State meet will be Roe, Ja, Colin Heckman, Michael Dean, Timothy Gee, Benny Yee, and Luis Villavelasquez. San Francisco's individual representatives will be Parrales, Michael Rivas (also of Burton), Derek Chiu and Alan Wu of Washington, and Saffroan Alzindam from International Studies Academy. In the Varsity Girls' race, sophomore Tracy Zhu became Lowell's 12th individual champion, and Lowell swept the top five spots for a score of 15. Lowell will send Zhu, Merry Lin-Lee, Katy Tang, Kelly Leong, Victoria Lau, Lisa He, and Peggy Leung to the State championship in Fresno. San Francisco's individual representatives will be Angelina Yu, Susan Lai, and Elizabeth Moore of Washington, and Jessica Estrada and Alice Leung of Lincoln. Lowell's victory in the two varsity divisions, along with a victory in the frosh-soph boys race, gives the school its 7th consecutive San Francisco Cross Country sweep.
