I knew it was going to be fast at the gun (or is that, at the Gunn?) but I didn't know how fast. Then as I was stretching for my attempt at this 2.18 mile race that I've been running longer than most of these kids have been alive, I heard Andrew Lipkin say that he wanted to go out under 5:00 and he was hoping there'd be someone there with him... let the games begin! The VB race took off way to fast, even Coach Ernie Lee who was running near last place could be heard yelling, "Too Fast!" within the first 300 meters, and I concurred. Up front it was SF Alum John Collin, Lipkin (Gunn), Ben Sitler (SF), Kevin Chavez (SF) and Chris Butterick (SF Alum) - with the first half going out at about 2:20 pace. This same group came thru the mile at about 4:55-:56 (it's hard to tell exactly when you're some 30 seconds back and trying to both watch the race and run the race. Going thru Bol Park the pack must have split up for the next time I caught sight of them (about 1.75) it was Collin, Lipkin & Sitler all racing tight together. Then with about 500m to go, Collin yells out, "Go St Francis", and he takes off. He hits the 2 mile under 10:00 and continues to pull away from Lipkin and Sitler who are waging their own battle. Lipkin said later, "It wasn't that I went into another gear at the end, I just continued to run hard", and that was all he needed to pull away from Sitler. "Sitler really made me run today, and he's only a Sophomore!" was Andrew's final comment of the day.
