Accomplishment: Jones, last year's Mercury News freshman of the year for track and field, placed third in the Serra Crystal Springs Invitational with a time of 18:10. She was first among Central Coast Section athletes, and her time was only one second behind the second-place finisher. Jones, who transferred from Los Gatos and is also an accomplished equestrian, won the Artichoke Invitational at Half Moon Bay.

Comment: ``Christine is very mature,'' Coach Dean Raymond said. ``I've coached a number of athletes, but none of her caliber, but she doesn't let it get to her head. She always has a smile on her face even when she's racing.''
