Follmar first in Artichoke, second at Crystal Springs

Alicia Follmar strikes again. The senior led the Saratoga cross country team at the Artichoke Invitational on Oct. 2 and the Crystal Springs Invitational on Oct. 5.

Follmar (13:25) took home the gold in the Artichoke Invitational, but the Falcons were not able to place higher than 20th in the race.

The next runner to come in for the Saratoga girls varsity squad was junior Jennifer Tam (16:58), who placed 98th overall. Less than a minute later came junior Laura Reeve (136th in 17:54) and senior Roxana Safipour (138th 17:57). Senior Jasmine Alkhatib (19:56) finished 175th.

The girls came in seventh in the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs race, despite Follmar (18:28.9) finishing second overall.

Senior Jessica Douglas (21:00.3) was fast enough to take 18th overall. Senior Chelsea Young (22:23.0) came in 40th with Tam (23:36.9) and Safipour (24:09.1) following in 54th and 59th.

The Saratoga boys also had their star for the two races in senior Hari Iyer.

Iyer (12:11) finished second overall in the Artichoke Invitational. Following Iyer in the race was junior Ken Douglas (12:43) in 20th and junior Henry Barmeier (13:25) 58th.

The final two point scorers for Saratoga were junior Robbie Paolini (13:40) in 70th and junior Scott Surrette (13:41) in 72nd.

Saratoga's varsity boys placed slightly better in the Crystal Springs race than the girls. With the team coming in fifth, they had a runner place second overall as well.

Iyer (16:01.3) finished five seconds off the leader to get second to lead the Saratoga showing.

Following Iyer was Douglas (17:17.4) in 17th and Barmeier (17:49.5), who took 31st. Paolini (18:19.2) finished behind Barmeier in 43rd with Surrette (18:43.0) 54th.

Lynbrook also made an appearance in the Crystal Springs Invitational. Lynbrook's varsity boys finished eighth with sophomore Jason Wang (17:54.3) leading the way with a 34th place finish.

After Wang was senior Luis Jensen (17:56.8) in 35th and junior Jonathan Tsai (18:12.1) was 40th. Junior Shamil Hargovan (18:40.0) took 51st overall with sophomore Jonathan Kwan (18:49.1) 56th.

Lynbrook's varsity girls came in 10th in the same race. Sophomore MayC Huang (21:53.5) led her team with a 34th place finish.

Just after Huang came junior Christina Liu (22:37.3), who took 43rd overall. Behind her was freshman Cindy Ju (23:01.3) in 47th, sophomore Yvonne Fong (23:09.3) in 48th and junior Helena Stahlberg (23:16.1) in 49th.

Lynbrook also sent a handful of runners to the Serra Invitational on Oct. 9. This 2.95-mile race had only two Lynbrook runners.

Huang covered the 2.95-mile course in 19:36 to finish in ninth place overall. Also in running for the girls was Stahlberg (60th in 22:13).

The rest of the runners were all junior varsity boys. Sophomore Jason Wang (17:46) led Lynbrook, coming in 15th place, with sophomore Jonathan Kwan (17:51) following close behind in 17th.
