Nast, Habatmu, Tang at state
By Dick Sparrer
For most runners in the Central Coast Section, the 2007 cross country campaign came to an close at the section finals held Nov. 10 at Crystal Springs in Belmont.
Three local girls, though, were not about to let the season end at CCS. The three--Katie Nast of Saratoga, Rebecca Habatmu of Prospect and Lauren Tang of Lynbrook--finished well enough at Crystal Springs to win spots in the state finals set for Nov. 24 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Nast, a junior, earned a return trip ticket to state by finishing ninth in the CCS Division III finals, completing the 2.95-mile course in 18:53. As a sophomore at the state meet in 2006, Nast ran 19:44 to finishing 39th.
Habatmu, a senior, blistered the Crystal Springs course in 17:46 to finish third in Division III, good enough for a state trip.
Tang is just a freshman, but the young Lynbrook sensation ran well enough to nail 10th place in the CCS Division II meet to qualify for state.
Those who finish high enough will be able to continue on to the Footlocker West Regional championships on Dec. 1.
