Iolani Invite - 2014
(I have a larger, printable version - contact HANKLAWTRACK@GMAIL.COM with picture ID# if you'd like it)
Sat - Slept late and hung out. Left at 12:15 and the excitement started to swell. Hot
when we first got there for the first 5 races (Open runners had to deal with 90 degree
heat). Then the clouds covered the sun and it began to sprinkle, beautiful. Little
muddy but that's XC. Girls took 6th with Angela leading the way with a 12th place
finish (2 spots out of the hardware). Then the boys had a battle with Gyser Peak, Dana
Hills and JSerra. When all was said and done, Gyser Peak won and then Lynbrook tied Dana
Hills for 2nd with 85 points - enter Chris Cheung who was the 6th man tie breaker allowing
the Vikes to walk away with 2nd place (yes, 6th man is VERY important). Pictures galore
on the victors podium. Back to the hotel for ice cream cake to celebrate Jim & Anna's
16th birthday. Next stop, Street Festival and a good night's sleep.
What I learned at Hanauma Bay, one must use LOTS of sunscreen. There's nothing like a
good burial. Don't feed the birds (or the lizards). Do feed (pasta) the runners and
charm the folks handing out the leis. Lots of dancing going on and everyone got involved.
Fri - Woke up to a heavy rainstorm (gee, what's that again...) but by 8am is was just wet
streets and lots of puddles. Got a nice team pic under the Banyan Tree in front of
the Zoo. Back to the park for an easy 3.5 with some strides and some
"artsy" pictures.
Exploring the beach on The Strip. The "old" International Market Place. Then off to
Ala Moana Shopping Center for dinner (squished like sardines on the bus). A free concert,
some gelato then back on a Double Decker.
Thur - 8:00am run at the park. Shirts on, shirts off. 5 miles later we even spotted a "bride".
Then it was 30-45-60 hard reps, 2 sets, before everyone tried to do a pull-up, or two, while
it began to rain. Then all were ready for some R&R after the 75 minute workout was done and
Jake was a happy coach.
And we made it to Hawaii. Check in at the hotel then a mile walk to Safeway
for some supplies (but we're still missing some Ego Lego waffles and HoneyNut Cherios).
Dinner was on our own and if you ever wonder what 1:30 in the morning in Hawaii looks
like... just ask Jake.
Wed - At the airport well in advance (or at least most of us) before our 10:10 flight out
to Oahu. Some exploring, homework and of course a heated card game.
