Coach Verne Thornburg taught (Social Studies) and coached (XC & Track) at Lynbrook HS from the "birth" of Lynbrook until 1989 (the same year that the State XC championships came into existence). That first year, Lynbrook opened with just freshman and sophmores, greeting only two runners for the team. The following year ('66) Lynbrook finished 7th out of 12 teams in the Varsity Boys division. Coach Thornburg then moved over to Homestead HS to become the XC coach. Verne now splits his time between the Bay Area and his adopted home of Turlock when the XC season is over. He still finds time to make it to the "Big Track Meets" while staying busy being "semi-retired."
