Follmar wins another state crown

Alicia Follmar has a tough act to follow when she returns in 2005 for her senior track season at Saratoga High School—her own.

Follmar will return in the spring of '05 as the defending state champion in the 1,600-meter run after winning the title on June 6 at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento.

But, then, that's nothing new for Follmar. She was the defending champ in the event this year when she toed the starting on Saturday.

Follmar romped to her second straight state crown in the 1,600, running 4:46.47 to finish just ahead of Woodcreek's Lauren Mulkey, second in 4:47.17.

The win came just a week after she ran 4:53.88 on a quick San José City College track to take the four-lap race at the Central Coast Section finals. Just like the state meet, she was defending the CCS title she had won as a sophomore.

Follmar entered the state meet June 45 with the state's best time, but she held back in the back in pack during Friday's trials, finishing just high enough to quality for the finals. There was no holding her back on Saturday, though.

The talented Saratoga junior was one of just two athletes from CCS to win a state title, and they both hailed from the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Allie Miller of Los Altos was a state champion in the high jump at 5-9.25.
