BEN SITLER, ST. FRANCIS

Sport: Track and field.

Event: Distance. Class: Junior.

Accomplishment: On Saturday, Sitler ran a 66-second final lap to break the St. Francis Invitational meet record in the 3,000 meters at 8 minutes, 43.83 seconds, outrunning his nearest competition by more than 35 seconds. Sitler planned to run 70-second laps and work on his consistency. But during the race, Lancers Coach Brian Curley saw Sitler averaging 69s and told him to go for the record. ``Brian shows every ounce of the discipline you'd find in a superior collegiate runner, and he's only a junior,'' Curley said. At the Mt. Pleasant Relays in February, he ran the second-fastest time this year in the Central Coast Section for the 1,600 meters at 4:17. Sitler's skills will be on display in Southern California this weekend at the Arcadia Invitational, the nation's most prestigious in-season meet.
