NICK GANCAYCO, ARCHBISHOP MITTY

Sport: Track and field. Class: Senior.

Accomplishment: Gancayco gave an outstanding performance at the West Catholic Athletic League championships last week. He broke a school record and earned the top time in the Central Coast Section in the 200 meters (21.79 seconds). He also helped his 4x100 relay team to the best time in the CCS (42.48). Although Gancayco's 4x400 relay team didn't take first place in the meet, its time (3:27.61) was enough to qualify for the section semifinals Friday. ``The team comes first to him,'' sprints coach Gaspar Torregroza said. ``He's really blossomed into an outstanding person.'' Gancayco was named Archbishop Mitty's male athlete of the year.

KHRYSTAL CARTER, VALLEY CHRISTIAN

Sport: Track and field. Class: Junior.

Accomplishment: During the West Catholic Athletic League championships, Carter earned a place in Central Coast Section history. Her times in the 100 and 200 meters are the best in the CCS this season, and her 100 time is the second-fastest ever. Her wind-legal time in the 100 (11.62 seconds) is tops in the state and second in the country, and her 200 time (23.97) is No. 2 in the state and No. 4 in the nation. Coach Greg Marshall said Carter has ``probably the most dedicated work ethic'' of any athlete he has coached. ``She's a great person, good in school, focused on her goals and objectives,'' Marshall said. Carter will compete Friday at the CCS semifinals at San Jose City College.
