Dear Parents,

Well, the Watermelon Run Race for 1980 is over and what does all the information
on the first page mean? It means anything you want it to mean,
for it is difficult at this stage of the cross country season to estimate what is
going to happen in the League Finals at Crystal Springs on Wednesday,
November 5, 1980. However, several things do stand out.

Congratulations to Michelle Seck and John Deagen for winning the Watermelon Run.

Congratulations to the sophomore class who won the team race for the first time.

We are not in great team shape, nor are we struggling badly.

We have again a fairly young team and it must be understood that it generally
takes time to develop as cross country runners. I believe that
we are coming along, but the big question is how far we can go??

Running at Lynbrook (flat) is far different than running at Crystal Springs (hills).
Last year we had more finishers than ever. I believe that 33
finished the run; however, eleven of them didn't during the year. Thus, we had
one of our poorest years ever, even if we started rather well.

The sophomores had their best time ever, although Steve Kilik was the 5th runner.
He had been sick with the flu the week before and isn't in as
good shape as he was last year at this time.

The girls' varsity team has continued to make improvements. Several girls did not run,
or the time would have been excellent. It was too bad that
Michelle Seck didn't break the school record. Perhaps next year it will fall. If
we can stay healthy and run as a team, Lynbrook will make things
very interesting in the league meet. St. Francis must be the favorite, with Saratoga,
Homestead, Cupertino, and Lynbrook not too far behind. We
will be improved and our league probably will be the best in the section. In fact it is.

The boys' varsity team is young and can be a big surprise this year. Our problem is running
together and being a team. We can run well: the
        question is doing it.

Our first race of the year will be at Homestead High School on Wednesday, September 24, 1980
at 3:00 pm. On Saturday, September 27th, we will
run at Sunnyvale, with the first race at 9:30 am. I'll get a schedule to you within the next few days.

Hope that you enjoyed the Boosters' Club breakfast. I had to work that day in Turlock,
so unfortunately had to miss it. The Boosters' Club is now
selling membership cards. If you do not have one, you can call Mrs. Kathy Dagang,
1183 Miller Ave., 255-0810, as she is the cross country
representative on the Boosters' Club executive board this year.

                                                                                Coach Thornberg
