Ben Sitler, St. Francis

Sport: Cross-country. Class: Junior.

Accomplishment: Sitler ran the fastest time among five boys divisions at Saturday's Central Coast Section championship, completing the three-mile Toro Park course in 15 minutes, 35 seconds. Sitler, who ran more than 1,000 miles over the summer, was unknown statewide until he finished sixth in October's Mt. SAC Invitational, the largest invitational in the country. Attempts to get him into the field of the top boys race were initially rejected. ``He's got a tremendous amount of potential,'' Coach Brian Curley said. ``I don't think he's anywhere close to what he can do.''

Tori Tyler, Gunn

Sport: Cross-country. Class: Senior.

Accomplishment: Until this fall, Tyler received more college attention for her soccer ability than her running. But Tyler dropped club soccer to concentrate on cross-country and has emerged as the top-ranked runner in the state. Tyler was the fastest girl out of five divisions at the Central Coast Section championships Saturday, completing the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 42 seconds to win her second consecutive Division II title by 42 seconds. Tyler, who will run at Washington next season, will attempt to become the second Gunn girl to win a state title in four years, after former teammate Ruth Graham accomplished the feat in 2001.

Cross-country: Christina Barrientos, Harbor; Cobbie Jones, Live Oak.

Water polo: Remy Champion, Palo Alto.

Alicia Follmar, Saratoga

Sport: Cross-country. Class: Senior.

Accomplishment: A defending state champion in cross-country and track, Follmar won her first CCS cross-country title Saturday by capturing the Division III crown in 18 minutes, 20 seconds on the three-mile Toro Park course. The race capped a big week for Follmar, who earlier signed a letter-of-intent to run for Stanford. Follmar will attempt a state repeat in Fresno on Nov. 27 with an eye toward a top-eight finish in the FootLocker Western Regionals and a berth in the national championships Dec. 11 in San Diego. ``She loves to run,'' Coach Peter Jordan said. ``She's totally dedicated, and she's consistently improving.''
