MATTHEW PETRILLO, LOS GATOS

Accomplishment: Petrillo set a Toro Park (Salinas) record Saturday and won his second consecutive Central Coast Section Division II championship with a time of 15 minutes, 12 seconds on the three-mile course as the Wildcats earned their second title in two years. Petrillo's time was the best of the day by nine seconds, and he beat the Division II runner-up by 34 seconds. Earlier this season, Petrillo set a course record at the Central Park Invitational in Santa Clara when he ran an 11:15 for 2.3 miles. At the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational in Los Angeles, Petrillo placed fourth overall at the three-mile course (15:19) and first at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division championships at Belmont's 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course (14:57). ``He's definitely been a big help to have around,'' Coach Tom Newman said. ``Matthew and all his buddies were a pretty impressive group of guys to coach.''

SAMMY HAMILTON, HALF MOON BAY

Sport: Cross-country. Class: Freshman.

Accomplishment: At Saturday's Central Coast Section championships, Hamilton set the freshman course record at Toro Park, covering three miles in 18 minutes, 25 seconds to win the Division IV title. Hamilton beat runner-up Thea Lee, a Carmel senior, by 12 seconds. Her previous time at Toro was 20:02 in the Monterey Bay Invitational, where she raced ill but still placed second. She also recorded victories in her division at the Lowell Invitational and the Ram Invitational at Westmoor, as well as the Peninsula Athletic League championships at Crystal Springs. ``Over the course of this season she has dramatically improved,'' Coach Paul Farnsworth said. ``She made the transition to high school very smoothly.''
