SALINAS -- The Carlmont High boys team went into Saturday's Central Coast Section cross country championship meet at Toro Park ranked second in Division I behind Bellarmine College Prep. But with all five scoring runners finishing in the top 13, Carlmont won its seventh CCS Division I boys championship in the past eight years with a team score of 39 points. Bellarmine was second with 55. "Our runners were really focused,'' Carlmont coach Laura Brassfield said. "They ran hard and they ran smart.'' Daniel Bereket led the Scots with a third-place finish in 15 minutes, 41 seconds on the 3-mile course. He was followed by Lucas Matison (sixth), Arthur Schulte (ninth), Tim Layten (11th) and Ryan Dimick (13th). Raymond Meijer led Bellarmine with a fourth-place finish, followed by Miles Meijer (10th) and Charles DeAnda (12th). Yohaness Estifanos of Milpitas won the race in the fastest time of the day (15:12). Andrew Hill's Miguel Vasquez placed second (15:27). Leland's Richard Ho had the second-fastest overall time in winning the Division II race in 15:21. Los Altos, led by second-place finisher Terence Rabuzzi, won the Division II team title with 70 points. There was a three-way tie for second between Aragon, St. Francis and Leland at 81. Aragon won the tie-breaker by virtue of having the fastest sixth runner, and received the automatic team berth at the state meet. Danielle Katz of Los Gatos won the girls Division II race in 17:46, just ahead of Los Altos freshman Lauren Jacob (17:49). Mountain View's Maya Weigel finished third (18:03), Westmoor's Kylie Goo fourth (18:04) and Archbishop Mitty's Molly Haar fifth, leading the Monarchs to the Division II team title. Katz had the second-fastest time overall among girls runners behind Division IV winner and defending state champion Vanessa Fraser of Scotts Valley (17:42). Ryan Corvese of Sobrato won the boys Division III race in 15:27. Saratoga sophomore Stephen Sum was second (15:32) and Grant Murphy of Mills placed third (16:05). Half Moon Bay's Logan Marshall was the boys Division IV winner (16:05), helping the Cougars to a second-place finish in the team standings behind Seaside. Crystal Springs Uplands won the boys Division V title and placed second in girls Division V.
