The top 2 finishers, Hari Iyer and Lance Wolfsmith, from the 2007 race were back again
for this years race. Iyer (Dartmouth) has won this race in all the 'odd' years and has
taken second in the 'even' years, will he be able to break this tradition with a win this
year? At the gun, Wolfsmith (Sobrato) took the lead and went thru the mile at 5:06 with
Iyer 2 seconds back. The flat/downhill second mile had the two going through at 10:07
(5:01) with no one else in sight. Wolfsmith continued to run a steady pace and was able
to get some air on Iyer during the third mile hitting it in 15:28 (5:21) with Iyer some
50 meters back. Then the hills began. Last year, this is where Lance cracked and faded,
this year was a different story. "I just wanted to keep the pace steady after 3 miles",
he commented. "Lance was ready to go this year", stated Iyer. But the race was still
not over and a faux-paux was waiting to happen. With 500 meters to go and a solid
50-60 meter lead over Iyer, Wolfsmith crossed the street and went through an open gate
to enter the stadium, problem is, this was not the course. By the time he realized his
mistake, turned around and went back out the gate and back onto the road, Iyer now had
a 2-3 second lead on Wolfsmith. "I did what I had to do in order to catch up, then once
I did, we just raced". When they hit the last 100, Wolfsmith just went. "I don't like
to loose to anyone in the last 100". Iyer finished .7 behind Wolfsmith in one of the
closest finishes in the races history. I guess Hari will look forward to 2009, an 'odd'
year.
The women's race had defending champ Alicia Follmar (Stanford) to see if she could make it
five wins in a row. Also in the race was Christine "Cobbie" Jones, a sub-2:10 800 runner
from UCLA and Jennifer Bergman of Valley Christian. From the start, Follmar took the lead
with Cobbie sticking close by and Bergman in third. The order stayed that way through 2
miles (11:30) until just before the 3 mile mark when Bergman passed Jones. "I never saw
Alicia once we left the track", Bergman said. For her effort Follmar made it 5 in a row
with a new Course Record of 23:08.8, a 5:47 average. Bergman took second also setting a new
16-18 Age Group record (which Follmar had previously owned). Valley Christian, where Jennifer
attends, also will be adding another Bergman to their team - Amy, and incoming Frosh) took
second in the 13-15 Age Group. Another course record was set in the Women's 60+ by Marcia
Parsons with a 39:47 clocking.
