--Shocking news here was Warren Rogers, 10.34 and 20.91 yesterday, not
showing, with statement of injury at the end of the 200 yesterday. Poly
duo of Kelly and Rideaux hoped to lead the Jackrabbit charge after a
botched exchange that had them disqualified earlier in the 4x100 relay.
Marshall Johnson, one of the sons of Santa Ana Valley 400 meter star
from a couple of decades back, Janet Steen, had a rocket start, with
Rideaux, then Kelly charging back, with Kelly edging ahead at tape
10.47w- 10.49w.

improvement (first ever auto- timed under 14.00 for him), with Ben Clark

--Kareem Kelly eventually edged away from Michael Mitchell for the win
here. Darrell Rideaux, the Poly athlete, not Kelly as first thought, was the
4x4 relay member who collided and fell yesterday, with ankle and back problems
that caught up with him here. Darrell had a big-time back cramp at the finish
and fell to fourth, needing some serious treatment for a time after the finish.
Vallejo continued to edge closer to the title.

--Great race. Josh Spiker and Fernando Cabada doing most of the work
through 64.9-2:13.6 and 3:23.4 splits, with Spiker and Escobar up front at
4:29.4 for the 1600. Four pulled away (Spiker-Escobar-Cabada, and Pina) by
5:38.4 for the 2000 (69.0 lap 5), with Josh suddenly backing off from
pressing the pace through a 37.0 first 200 in lap 6. McInvale had edged up
to the front group by 6:51.0 six lap (35.6 200). 1600 winner Marcus Chandler
surprisingly was at the tail end o the top pack by now. At 7:59.6 and the
bell a number of people were close. Chandler moved up to press Escobar for
the lead at the 3000 meter point (8:32.4), with the four lap winner appearing
to be able to pull off a big double during a furious homestretch run. However,
just into the homestretch Spiker caught fire, sprinting up to and just catching
Escobar, then Chandler right at the finish 9:02.00- 9:02.22-9:02.49. It was a
classic race, as all thought it would be.

--Interesting struggle between the newcomer, Alejandra Barrientos, who
had gone from about a 2:30 800m runner last year to a 4:47.94 1600m runner,
and Sara Bei, double winner 1600-3200 this year. Barrientos and Stevens early
pace-setting. 68.5- 2:24.4, with Spring Dawson prominent up near the front.
At the bell in 3:39.9 it was as you had written the script, with Bei and
Barrientos side by side, stride for stride. Sara pushed it down the backstretch,
but Alejandra moved ahead with 200 to go and edged away to a nation-leading
4:45.02 win, with Bei lifetime best 4:46.71 in second.

and Siraki out front early on with 76.5-2:30.7-3:49.9 and 5:06.9 first four
lap splits. Bei sat back a few places 10 seconds behind. Through 6:24.4 and
7:43.7 lap points Fleshman continued to roll, with Sara fifteen seconds back
at the end of six laps. At 9:02.6 Fleshman was way out, closing in 76 for her

here along with her 4:46.71 lifetime best in the 1600 earlier in the evening
for another great chapter in her career.
