I have included Northern Nevada marks, since they are part of the USATF Pacific Association. You will see these athletes in PAUSATF Junior Olympic competition this summer.

Key: A=mark made at altitude above 1,000 meters; i=indoors; -=senior; *=junior; **=sophomore; ***=freshman; ?=grade unknown, +=converted from yards to meters.

The minimum reporting standards are listed in parenthesis after the event.

Subject: t-and-f: Tragedy in NJ

Netters:
Manuel Gutierrez, a 16-year old junior at Bergen Catholic HS (Oradell, NJ), collapsed and died during an routine training run on March 8.

It was the opening day of practice for outdoor track and the Bergen boys were running on the road near the school in Oradell when Manuel collapsed. A passing motorist administered CPR treatment, but to no avail.

Gutierrez had been a member of the Crusader team since his freshman year and, while he had no individual laurels to his credit, he had run with some of the school's successful relay teams. He was also an honor student, valedictorian at his elementary school, and a well-liked member of the 800-student school, which is conducted by the Christian Brothers of Ireland (who have a more famous track and field school a few thousand miles away in Kenya, as well as a few in their
native country).

Correction: Wednesday's News & Notes story on Regina Jacobs' withdrawal from the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

March 16, 2001--Wednesday's USATF News & Notes item incorrectly stated that Regina Jacobs pulled out due to fatigue.

Regina could not compete because of an illness. Jacobs commented, "I have been fighting some sort of super-cold, virus since Christmas. It appears to leave for a week and then comes back, just as strong. I wasn't feeling right in Atlanta [at the Pontiac Grand Prix USA Indoor Championships] and took a chance at competing at World Indoors. I only had the strength to make it through the rounds. I made the decision not to compete in the World Cross Country Championships because I felt I needed to get healthy and have a great outdoor season."

USA Track & Field apologizes for the error.

Sean Albert won the 10-kilometer competition and 2000 Olympian Tim Seaman captured the 30K title at the first Race Walking International Extravaganza March 11 at Bayside Park in Chula Vista, Calif.
Seaman finished first in 2 hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds, one minute short of Alan James' national 30K road record. Also competing in the 30K were Seaman's 2000 Olympic teammate Philip Dunn (2:22.59), Steve Pecinovsky (2:42.05) and Dave Doherty (2:55.53).
Albert faced a stiff challenge from Ecuadorian Xaiver Moreno and Sweden's Andres Gustafson before winning the event in 41:54. Moreno placed second in 42:34 with Gustafson finishing third in 46:23.
The Chula Vista event was the second in a series or RWI events designed to develop young walkers and provide avenues for athletes to stay in the sport.

NCAA Indoor Wrap-up

NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships were held in Divisions I, II and III last weekend, highlighted by a close finish in the men's Division I team competition in Fayetteville, Arkansas. By the slimmest of margins, Louisiana State University edged Texas Christian University 34-33 to take the men's team title.
LSU secured the championship by winning the 4x400-meter relay in 3 minutes, 04.44 seconds, while TCU finished in 3:12.83 after dropping the baton in that event. The host Arkansas Razorbacks finished third in the team standings with 32 points.
2000 U.S. Olympian Walter Davis won the triple jump for LSU with a leap of 55 feet, 5 inches, and finished second in the long jump (26-3.50) behind his Olympic teammate Savante Stringfellow of Mississippi, who won the event with a leap of 26-6.25.
UCLA won the women's title in Fayetteville by amassing 53.5 points, easily outdistancing South Carolina, which finished second with 40 points. Christina Tolson (Cal State Northridge 1998) led the way for the Bruins, winning the shot put with a throw of 55-9.75 and taking second place in the weight throw with a best effort of 68-9.75. Tracy O'Hara (Rancho Bernardo High School, San Diego 1998) was 2nd in pole vault for the Bruins with a jump of 13-9.25, and Deana Simmons (MacArthur High School, Decatur, IL 1996) added to UCLA's point total by finishing 2nd in the triple jump with a best of 44-2.5.
Abilene Christian proved its dominance once again at the NCAA Division II Championships in Boston by winning its fifth consecutive men's indoor title and eighth straight women's championship. Abilene's men's team edged St. Augustine's 80-77 to take the team title, while the women's team squeaked by North Dakota State, 48-47. Kenya's John Kemboi dominated the middle distances for Abilene Christian by winning the 800 meters in 1:49.71 and the mile in 4:00.34.
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's team captured its record eighth NCAA Division III national team title with the aid of two event champions and five other top-six event finishes. The Eagles scored 58 points to win the Championship, 14 more points that the host University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which finished second.
Also in Oshkosh, Wheaton College compiled the second-highest point total in the 17-year history of the women's NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. Wheaton's 63 points included first-place finishes in the triple jump, 400 meters and the 1600-meter relay. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse finished a distant second with 35 points.

TEAM USA READY FOR WORLD CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field on Tuesday announced the Team USA lineups that will compete at the 29th IAAF World Cross Country Championships March 24-25 in Ostend, Belgium.
Team USA will be led by Deena Drossin, Elva Dryer, Cheri Kenah and Collette Liss on the women's side, with Mebrahtom Keflezighi, Abdi Abdirahman, Bob Kennedy, Tim Broe and Brad Hauser leading the men's contingent.
A total of six races will be held at the World Championships in the following divisions: senior men's 12km and 4km, senior women's 8km and 4km, junior men's 8km and junior women's 6km.
The timetable is as follows:

March 24, 2001 March 25, 2001
13:05 Junior Women's Race 14:30 Junior Men's Race
13:45 Men's Short Race 15:20 Women's Short Race
14:15 Women's Long Race 16:00 Men's Long Race

Athletes earned their places on the U.S. team during a two-day trials competition that mirrored the format used at the World Championships. At the USA Winter Cross Country Nationals February 17-18 in Vancouver, Washington, three championship races were held each day with the top six finishers in each competition qualifying for the trip to Belgium.

Women's Team Preview:

The U.S. women's long course team will be led by Deena Drossin, who has established herself as the dominant force in U.S. women's cross country. Last month in Vancouver, Drossin won her fourth career long course national title, putting her third on the all-time U.S. Championship list, trailing just Doris Brown (five championships) and three-time world cross country champ Lynn Jennings, who owns an amazing nine U.S. cross country titles. Drossin also won the 4km title at the 2000 USA Winter Nationals in Greensboro, becoming the only woman in history to win the short and long course titles at the same event since the short course race was added in 1999.
Although she battled a nagging Achilles injury before the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Drossin ended the 2000 season ranked #1 in the U.S. at 10,000 meters by Track & Field News. Drossin set a new Olympic Trials record of 31:51.05 when she won the race in Sacramento, Calif. She also placed 2nd in the 5,000 meters at the 2000 Trials, ending the year ranked #2 nationally in that event. Drossin also holds the U.S. 5K road record.
The women's 4km team will be led by Elva Dryer, who placed second in Vancouver. The 3rd place finisher in the 5000 meters at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials, Dryer finished just ahead of Cheri Kenah in Vancouver. Kenah finished the 2000 season ranked #8 nationally at 1500 meters and #10 at 5000 meters, and was runner-up in the 3,000m at the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix USA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Collette Liss will also compete in the 4K in Belgium after capturing the 2001 U.S. indoor mile. Liss was the top finishing American in the 4K at last year's World Cross Country Championships, placing 20th in 13:32.
The junior women's squad will be led by national champ Laura Zeigle, who placed 3rd at the 2001 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships. A prep at South Jordan (Utah) High School, Zeigle won the 3,200-meter title at the 2001 National Scholastics Indoor Championships.

Men's Team Preview

The men's 12km team will be led by Mebrahtom Keflezighi, who dominated a talented field in Vancouver in winning his first U.S. cross country title. The 2000 Olympic Trials 10,000 meter champion, Keflezighi went on to finish 12th at the Olympic Games in Sydney. A four-time NCAA champion while at UCLA, Keflezighi was the highest finishing American at the 2000 World Cross Country Championships in the12K (26th - 36:45).
Keflezighi's Olympic 10,000 meter teammate Abdi Abdirahman will compete in the 12K in Ostend after placing third at the U.S. Winter Nationals. Abdirahman was third at 10,000 meters at the 2000 Olympic Trials before placing 10th at the Olympic Games. He was 45th at last year's World Cross Country Championships in Vilamoura, Portugal. Also leading the U.S. men's long course squad will be two-time Olympian Bob Kennedy. Kennedy, who in 1992 became the first runner in 32 years to win the NCAA and USA cross country crowns in the same year, is a three-time U.S. 5000 meter champion and the American record holder at that distance.
Tim Broe will lead the U.S. team in the 4km competition in Belgium after winning the U.S. title. The 2000 NCAA 3000-meter steeplechase champ, Broe just missed the U.S. Olympic Team last summer when he finished 4th in that event at the Trials in Sacramento. Broe is enjoying the best season of his career, winning the 2001 USA Indoor title at 3,000m on March 3. Assisting Broe in the leadership role will be 2000 Olympian Brad Hauser, who placed 2nd in the 5000 meters at last year's Olympic Trials. Hauser finished 58th in the long course race at the 2000 World Cross Country Championships.
Topping the U.S. Junior men's squad is 2001 national champ Matt Tegenkamp of the University of Wisconsin. Tegenkamp will be joined by prep phenom and two-time Foot Locker high school cross country champ Dathan Ritzenhein, who placed 2nd at the Winter Nationals, and Stanford's Ian Dobson, who finished third at Nationals.

Competition is scheduled Friday, March 23 from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday, March 24 from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Sunday, March 25 from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. For more information, visit www.tracs.net or call 617-332-3919.

Team USA Southern California takes shape

Several of America's top distance runners have committed to be part of Team USA Southern California, the first West Coast training center in the Team USA Distance Running program.
2000 Olympians Deena Drossin, Meb Keflezighi, Abdi Abdirahman, Jen Rhines and Amy Rudolph highlight Team USA Southern California, the newest of three Team USA Training Centers. Other athletes include Phil Price, James Menon, Terrence Mahon and Milena Glusac. Former UCLA head track coach Bob Larsen and former Adams State coach Joe Vigil will coach Team USA Southern California.
Founded last July by Running USA and USA Track & Field, Team USA serves as a program to help support American distance runners. A system of training bases throughout the country, Team USA was designed to provide a foundation that will lead to medal-winning performances by U.S. athletes in international competition. The first two Team USA Training Centers, in Rochester Hills, Michigan (Hansons Running Shop) and Rochester, New York (Team BrownStone), were announced last November.
Nike has committed to a three-year sponsorship with Running USA and USA Track & Field to support the new California training center. "Nike recognizes the need to develop a new elite in American distance running," said John Capriotti, director of global athletics for Nike. "The emergence of world class stars can inspire the entire American running community to new heights."
"We are grateful for Nike's commitment to the Team USA program," said Basil Honikman, Running USA Executive Director. "It will help develop the next generation of U.S. distance running stars."
In addition to the support of Nike, Team USA has also received support and financial contributions from the New York City Marathon, Bill Rodgers Jingle Bell Run, and the Holiday Race Series produced by BKB Ltd. of Denver.

Everett hangs up spikes

Three-time Olympian Mark Everett has retired from track and field. The 2000 Olympic Trials 800m champion (1:45.67), Everett finished fifth in the first round heat of the 800 meters (1:49.77) in Sydney. An 11-time national champion, both indoors and outdoors, Everett also competed in the 1988 and 1992 Games. He won gold at the 1993 World Championships running anchor of the 4x400m relay and bronze at the 1991 World Championships at 800m.

GREAT RACE OF THE GREAT BAY
Hello Coaches,
I grabbed as many e-mail addresses as I could find from recent bulk results' mailings among other places. So if you receive this (most more than once) and are not interested, please forgive the intrusion.
I am trying to reach as many NCS coaches as possible and of course as many California coaches as I can too. The reason is that next September 8th, a new cross country invitational will be held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. It is being put on by Rick Hill and billed as one of a series of Great American Races. I have spoken with Rick over the past few months and offered to assist him. I just figured it was my turn to get involved with a meet after all these years.
Anyway, Redwood will be a "co-host" school along with a couple others from the SF area. Redwood will handle some race day stuff (with Rick and his group handling the majority of the load). I have also agreed to help Rick get in touch with as many local schools and their coaches as possible. Please pass on your phone number to me if you can. This will make it easier to call you direct instead of going to the school and tracking you down. If you don't want to, then don't. Rick wants to call each of you.
I am told that all local schools will be accepted for entry, with other top caliber teams flown in from around the country! It should be a lot of fun, and I hope you'll bring your team. Visit the web-site and go through the "registration" section. It may seem a bit long, but it is a part of the invite process. Again, this meet is for all the local schools and then some big-time out of state schools. We have run in similar meets in the past and it is great fun to mix in with other teams from around the country.
Please pass on to as many coaches as you want. Any interest or questions, reply to me.
See below for some other info. Deadline is April 15th.

Event Overview
We are pleased to announce a new series of national high school cross country races called
the Great Races of America. These races will be an extension of the Great American Cross
Country Festival held the past two years in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The races are as follows
Great Race of the Great Bay
Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA
September 8, 2001
Great American Championships
Winthrop Farm Meadows, Charlotte, NC
September 21-22, 2001
Great Big Apple Challenge
Van Cortlandt Park New York, NY
September 29, 2001
All races will be by invitation only. Invitations will be extended in April to schools based on
completed team profiles. To judge and invite teams, based on uniform criteria, we have
established an on-line team and school registration system. This system will eliminate
paperwork and will create a valuable database to review teams and athletes. You may register
your team by going to the REGISTRATION page of this web site. Once a school or individual
is entered into our system, all invitations, confirmations, hotel reservations, flight schedules,
roster submission, race seeding, and starting box assignments will be communicated from
this web site and by way of e-mail. You will also have the ability to review other teams, their
school history and the profiles of elite athletes.
Look for additional information and updates in the coming months.
For immediate information, please call Rick Hill, 704-752-1887 or fax to 704-752-1886.
*************
I asked Rick a few specific questions about the meet and here are his responses:
Tom here the answers to your questions:

1. Teams. You can confirm the California powers Long Beach Poly and
Peninsula will run. You can also state that teams from Oregon, Washington,
New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Ohio, Georgia, and Virginia have
registered, including several national ranked teams. We will pick up several
more states in the next few weeks.
2. The structure of the races are as follows: We will have three or four
divisions of the Invitational Boys and Invitational Girls. Each race will be
independent of the other two or three. Each will have its own scoring and
own awards. There will not be combined scoring at the end to determine the
best of the day.

Because it is so early in the season this format will allow us to spread
teams over various divisions to avoid unnecessary pressure as teams prepare
for the balance of the season. Teams will be placed in divisions by a seeding
system. Each of the top seeds will be placed in different races. We will
also spread teams from the same conference and same section into as many
different sections as possible.

You should note that our divisions will not be based on school size.

We will also have a JV race, Frosh/Soph race, Middle School Race and
Adult/Coaches race.

3. The festival aspect of the event should be stressed. Pasta dinner in the
park on Friday evening, marching band, DJ, dynamic sound system, former
Olympians to attend, Nike retail store, and post race dinner/dance.

4. A major feature of the festival will be the social events held at the
meet headquarters at the San Francisco Marriott. We have negotiated very
favorable rates in the hotel at approximately $37.50 (4 to a room) per person
per night. We highly encourage local teams to join the party for the
weekend. We will have hospitality suites for both athletes and coaches.
Olympic athletes will hang out with the kids on Friday night and Saturday
night. We will have displays and clinics.

A post race dinner/dance and party will be held at Sony's Metreon on Saturday
evening. We will have games, dinner, movie and dance.

Hope this answers your questions.

Rick

Ray Kring (1924-2001)

Ray F. Kring (1924-2001)
Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. March 17 for Ray F. Kring, Santa Maria at the Rancho Miranda, 2000 Cambridge Way, Santa Maria, California. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Ray Kring, 76, passed away on Feb.16, 2001, after a 13-year battle with Parkinson's disease. He is remembered as a father, a husband, a world-class athlete, a distinguished and dedicated coach and teacher.

He was born in Empire, California on Dec. 26, 1924.

His love of track and field developed in high school, where he was a standout in the pole vault at Stockton High School. At age 17 he enlisted in the Marines and spent a two-year tour of duty in the South Pacific. He then attended the College of the Pacific (now the University of the Pacific) in Stockton, where as an undergraduate he was undefeated in four years of competition in the pole vault. He was selected on the All World Track Teams of 1945-46-47 and 53, and was a member of the USA Goodwill Team that competed against the Japanese in Japan in 1951. He went on to be ranked ninth in the world for the pole vault in 1953.

Ray began his 38-year career as a track and cross-country coach at El Dorado High School in Placerville, California in 1951. After winning five league titles in seven years, he went on to become the head coach at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, California. There, his teams won eight straight league titles. His overall high school dual meet coaching record was 88 wins out of 90.

Ray's career in coaching was also distinguished by foreign service. During the years 1964-65 he was appointed as a track and field specialist to Turkey for the US State Department. This was followed by two more assignments, one in Iran in 1971 and the other in Peru in 1977. He was also the author of a book entitled, "A Complete Guide to High School Track and Field Coaching."

In 1968, Ray took over the track and cross-country programs at Allan Hancock College. There he continued his success with several more conference and state championships during his 22 years as head coach. Perhaps his most cherished accomplishment at Allan Hancock College was having all four of his children compete under his tutelage. He loved coaching so much that he frequently said he would gladly have paid to be able to do it. He retired from coaching and teaching in 1990.

Ray was a man of many talents. His hobbies included painting, filmmaking and carpentry. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, collegues and former members of his track and cross-country teams. He is survived by his wife Millie Kring, Santa Maria; children, Kenny Kring, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Buddy Kring, Boulder, Colorado, Tim Kring, Los Angeles, California, Becky Rosen, Las Vegas, Nevada; 11 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, 751 S. Black Road, Santa Maria, CA 93454.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary.

Keith, I knew Ray fairly well, from our UOP connection. And Ray's brother was my barber in Stockton.
One thing comes to mind. Ray told me every time he drove under an underpass, which said 14 feet, or thereabouts, he'd say to himself, "I can do that."

Keith,
I am very saddened to hear of Ray's passing. I was aware of his poor health for the last few years.
I first met Ray while in high school (Grass Valley High, then Nevada Union my senior year). He was the coach at El Dorado high school in Placerville. He was known to athletes in the area because he was still pole vaulting.
I think from there he went to Pittsburgh high school and then on to Hancock.
He was inducted into the Calif. Community College Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992.
When I first started coaching at CSM, I used to take my xc team to the Hancock Invitational. We always had great times and he was always a gracious and well-organized host. These were fabulous memories. I have a picture of my team while at the meet and I was wearing a Coat and Tie. Things were a little more formal then.

Ray was a great friend and very respected member of the Northern California Community College coaching fraternity. We missed him when he retired and will miss him even more now.
Bert Bonanno, AD at San Jose City should be able to give you some more info on Ray.

Keith, you have aroused my interest, and I am looking in my old T&FN's for Ray Kring. I'll give it to you as I find it.
No mark in 1948.
13'9 3/4" in 1949, 13th on the June list, competing for COP. That mark left him 18th in the world for the year.
He cleared 14 feet in 1950, 14th in the world.
In 1951, 14' again, 15th in the world.
1952: ti4e 5th at FOT, 13' 6 3/8; missed 14'1 3/8". His best mark for 1952 was 13'9", tie for 38th in the world list.
1953: He cleared 14'2" to place 9th on the world list. He made World Ranking in 9th place, based on another vault of 14'1" and three at 14'. His season ended before the AAU meet.
1954: 14'1 1/4", which placed him tie for 21st on the world list.
1955: Best of 14', 37th on the list.
19556: The list goes down to 14'1" and Kring is not on it.

I don't know which year was his last.
I remember his delight at being World Ranked.
He had sons (two I think) who were fairly good in track. It seems to me one of them competed in the decathlon. They lived in Santa Maria, I think, where he coached for many years.

The Athletic Director at San Jose City College
Worked with Ray in the Pittsburg schools.
They had a great junior high and high school track program.
The Superitendent was an Olympian and both principals were trackmen.
Ray coached Don Pierce, the first High Schooler to jump 7-0 in high school competition.
It happened at El Cerrito High School and was on the front page of the Oakland Tribune.
Ray was a great communicator. I don't think I ever heard him raise his voice.
His son Kenny Kring was a decathlete at Stanford and competes in the Penn Relays.
Ray had Parkinson's Disease.
He never lost a league meet. Pitt was the smallest school in the league.

Ray Kring has had a tremendous influence on Calif. Community College Track and Field but I fear too few people in the system today had the honor and privilege to know him or of his contributions. We could write volumes on Ray, his successful programs at Hancock College, his close and very loving family, his spirit and humor, and just "down to earth grass-roots" approach to sport. We who were fortunate enough to coach when Ray was around will long remember how he pioneered the multi-events and the fun the athletes and coaches all had at the original "State Decathlon Championships" in Santa Maria. He founded the event and was the inspiration for many of us to train our athletes to become decathletes. At Mt. SAC alone, many of our athletes earned scholarships only because because of "Ray's Decathlon Championships" and the work and effort our athletes put in to do well at his special year- end event. I am proud to have known and worked with this very fine and professional gentleman. He leaves us with a legend he would have been proud of, but would have never taken credit.

I was a freshman at the time at West Valley College (1969-70) when I first met Ray Kring through one of his son's Kenny. Such a wonderful and giving man and an excellent coach, his sons were equally wonderful young men. Kenny and I got to be friends through track, he a jumper along with his younger brother, Buddy, me a distance runner. The camaraderie we shared had nothing to do with our events but rather from the passion we had for the sport. Something both younger Krings shared and patterned from their father. I haven't seen them in years but have thought of them often. Friendships like theirs is what makes track and field and running so special, just like their father.
My blessings go out to the Kring Family,
