Coaches:
Attached is the updated schedule. There is probably no chance that we will run ahead of schedule. The new schedule includes a
3rd heat in the VB 100, 200, 400 races to accommodate our wheelchair athlete.
I sent out the turn judges information yesterday. Make sure that the field officials read it too, since the last page is for them.
Field judges have a meeting at 3:45pm by starting line. At that time, you will be given the field sheets. Hank printed the sheets to
include the alternates at the top in a light gray font. I will have the sheets updated to show who scratched and which alternates are
in. I will add our wheelchair athlete to the VB SP. Under no circumstances should anyone else be added to the sheets since the
alternates are already there and only 16 competitors should be competing in each field event accept for VB SP (17) and VB HJ
(maybe 17 - tie for alternates). After the meeting, the field judges should report to their event and start check-in and warm ups.
First throw or jump should be at 4:30pm. Under no circumstances should any athletes start warm-ups without an official.
The infield is a restricted area and so is the track surface with the horizontal jumps, no electronics allowed except in the coaches’
boxes. For the high jump, there is a soccer goal that will be the coaches box. In the box, you may talk to your athletes and show
them video. There will be a coaches box on the concrete near the discus area marked by chalk or tape. I previously sent this
information below:
Use of Electronic Devices
The use of electronic devices is permitted in unrestricted areas and coaches’ boxes in a meet provided it does not interfere with
the progress of the meet. Coaches and athletes can review video in these areas and discuss techniques and strategies.
When a competitor views video or uses wireless devices in a restricted area during competition (on the clock for a trial in field events
or in a race for running events) they have gained an unfair advantage over their opponents. This infraction to the rules and will lead
to disqualification from the event.
The games committee for each meet will determine all restricted and unrestricted areas. Restricted areas are limited to competitors,
officials, and event personnel only.
There will be a coaches box for the horizontal jumps on the concrete walkway near the start of the runway. For the shot put, it will
be located somewhere behind the ring. They will be marked with chalk or tape.
The infield from the 50 yard line to end zone near the street can be used by the hurdlers so they have access to hurdles. All other
athletes should use the back field, gate is near the snack shack.
Check in for the running events will be in the corner of the track by the snack shack. There will be 3 gates open to gain access to
the track, discus and high jump. The main gate is by the check-in area, there is a gate between the discus and shot put, and the
last gate is by the horizontal jumps. I will have SC workers at the gates to make sure everyone crosses the track when it is safe.
When the discus is over, we will open up the infield for warm ups.
Coaches should stay off the infield, unless they are working or using the coaches boxes.
During the VB discus, be vigilant when near the discus area, I find that the discus is rolling farther on the artificial surface. We do
have some throwers that can throw far. I will have people and a fence to keep it under control.
There will be a snack shack with hamburgers and hot dogs, etc.
CCS entries are due on Tuesday, May 10 at 9am. Hank will send the results to Mark McConnell. I will send the scratches to Mark.
6 boys and 6 girls will qualify to CCS along with anyone that meets the At-large mark. If you have an athlete that is scratching an
event, send it to Julie and copy to the alternate’s coach. Everyone needs to keep an eye on their emails over the weekend. Remember
after 9am on Tuesday, we can’t make any changes. Get your scratches in early so we can fill the slots.
Remember 8 coaches per a school. If you have extra workers, send me the number by 9am tomorrow. Currently only 2 coaches
have asked for extra workers: Monta Vista and Gunn.
If I missed anything, send email.
Good luck tomorrow!

They will need cash to buy tickets.

Coaches:
Below is the assignments for the turn judges. I don’t need the names of the turn judges. if there is a problem, I will contact the head coach.
Please make sure they read the attached document and know their assignments. By 5:20pm, they should be in place. I have 3 white/yellow
flags if anyone needs one, if necessary, I also have red/white flags. There will be times when certain judges are not working, stay in your
area until you are relieved by the next shift. At the end of the meet, turn in your flags.
I will tell the ticket seller to let in 8 coaches per school. If you need more, let me know. Let me know how many workers you are bringing
that aren’t coaches. I will leave the number with the ticket seller. If you have questions, email me.
Here are the assignments for the turn judges:
Turn Judges:
First Half – 400m relay – 100m
50m – Milpitas
Exchange Zone 1 - Wilcox, Mt. View
Exchange Zone 2 - Mt. View, Saratoga
Exchange Zone 3 – Wilcox, Saratoga
350m – Palo Alto
Second Half – 800m – 1600m relay
50m – Milpitas
Exchange Zone 1 - Milpitas, Palo Alto
Exchange Zone 2 - Los Altos, Palo Alto
Exchange Zone 3 – Los Altos, Saratoga
350m – Los Altos
For those assigned to Exchange Zones, once the 400m relay is done, make sure to cover the turn. For those assigned to the 50m area
look for lane violations and during the 1600m relays move closer to the end of the exchange zones and look for infractions or interference.
For those assigned to the 350m area look for hurdling interference. Also, as a race is finishing move closer to the finish line to observe
in infractions. Same for the 4x400m relay.
All turn judges should read the attached turn judges document on what to look for.
The league will be turn judges at CCS Trials and Finals and they will be handed similar handouts (possibly the same since I got it from them).
There will probably be one more email tomorrow. If I have missed anything, email me.

For those asking about the video rule, here it is (taken off the NFHS website):
Use of Electronic Devices
The use of electronic devices is permitted in unrestricted areas and coaches’ boxes in a meet provided it does not interfere with the
progress of the meet. Coaches and athletes can review video in these areas and discuss techniques and strategies.
When a competitor views video or uses wireless devices in a restricted area during competition (on the clock for a trial in field events

disqualification from the event.
The games committee for each meet will determine all restricted and unrestricted areas. Restricted areas are limited to competitors,
officials, and event personnel only.
State associations may also have policies in place to further address the use of electronic devices.
I will try to set up coaches’ boxes for the field events.

Coaches:
Friday, May 6 will be a busy day for sports at Santa Clara, besides the track meet, baseball has a game
against cross town rival, Wilcox. School gets out at 3pm, for best parking start arriving by 3:20pm.
The main parking is by the track and the staff parking lot is at the start of the bus circle. The
baseball game starts at 4pm.
Please forward to your assistant coaches and anyone that will be officiating a field event.
Here is information for the meet:
1) The scratch meeting is at 4pm. We will not reseed the heats. If the scratch is from the fast heat,
the fastest qualifier from the slow heat will move to take that spot and the alternate will take the spot
in the slow heat. If it is from the slow heat, the alternate will be placed in the empty lane.
Field Events
2) There will be a Field Official meeting at 3:45pm. All the Head Field Judge should be at the meeting,
otherwise the Head Coach can attend and give the information to the official.
3) All field athletes for the first group of field events should arrive no later than 4pm. Weigh-ins are
from 3:45-4:10pm. Warm ups should start no later than 4:15pm with official competition at 4:30pm. Anyone
not checked in by then should be scratched. Alternates can only be added if there is a scratch and their
name is on the alternate list. Upon check in, the official should determine if they have any conflict
with another event and note it.
4) A time schedule for the meet will be included on all field events clipboard, along with rules, the
alternate list and the field sheets. The schedule can be used to help determine when an field athlete
can check out for another event. For running events, the athlete should be allowed to leave no earlier
than 10 minutes before their race and immediately return after the race. Note the time they leave for a
race on the field sheet. When competing in 2 different field events, they should be allowed 10 minutes
to go to the other event and make at least 1 or more attempts. Again note the leaving time on the field
sheet. Field athletes can take multiple attempts or compete out of order. The field official can move
then to a different flight also. See the NFHS Rule 3-10, articles 3 & 4. Attached file has the rules.
5) The LJ, TJ, SP and Discus will compete in 2 flights with the top 8 marks competing in the 2nd flight,
the rest of the competitors in the first flight. Everyone receive 3 attempts. At the completion of the 2
flights, the top 8 will get 3 more attempts. They will compete in reverse order of their place after the
initial 3 attempts.
6) For HJ and PV the athletes will compete in 1 flight. The starting height will be 2 inches lower than
the qualifying height of the last place qualifier. For the HJ or PV athletes, allow the athletes that have
other events to check out for only 10 minutes at a time. Warn them if they are not back in the allotted time,
the bar could be moved up. Please note the time they checked out on the field sheet. Also, offer attempts
out of order to keep the competition moving. I will attach a page with case studies on checking out from
the NFHS T&F Rule Book.
7) If there is a tie for 6th place in the HJ, there will be a jump-off for the final qualifying spot to CCS.
8) Field athletes, checking out for another field event, should be given a time limit for returning. The
high jump official cannot hold the jumpers at that event and prevent them from going to other field events.
9) For the HJ and PV, athletes can state their starting height. They don’t need to be there to pass each
height. It is their responsibility to be back there when that height is reached. The HJ, LJ and TJ events
are all at one end of the stadium so it should make it easy to go between those events.
Running Events
10) There will be slow/fast heats for all track events, except the 1600m and 3200m, with the athletes/schools
with the best 8 marks in the fast heats and the remaining in the slow heat.
11) The 1600m and 3200m will use an alley start with the top 5 or 6 in the outer alley and the rest in the
inner alley. They will be placed with the fastest athlete by qualifying time on the outside and in order to
the slowest in lane 1. The 800 will be a 1 turn stagger in lanes.
12) If we can run ahead of the schedule, we will.
13) Athletes and alternates should check in at least 30 minutes ahead of their schedule event. Alternates
should show up at the starting line, in case a competitor does not show.
14) No warm ups in the infield until all discus events are done. There is a warm up field behind the snack shack.
15) Electronic devices are not allowed on the infield, unless they are being used by officials to communicate
with each other. Only coaches may shoot and show video to their athlete.
16) Coaches should stay off the infield. For the LJ and TJ, the coaches may stand on the cement next to the
pits, no coaches on the track surface of the jump area. For SP, stand outside the fence of the shot put area.
For the HJ and Discus, stand outside the fence around the track.
17) For those that have not been to SC, our long and triple jump pits are at the end of the visitor’s side
bleachers. There is a fence a few feet at the end of the pit so jumpers need to be careful. If we need a
new foul line, we can add one with athletic tape.
18) The rules and infractions for the 4x400 relay hand-offs from the NFHS Track are in the attachment.
We have a history of issues with the 4x400 relays.
I will send out turn judging assignments later in the week. If you have any questions, email me.
Also, I have been told it is a realignment year so I need everyone’s win/loss record for each division for
2021 and 2022 so I can do the calculations to determine who goes up and who goes down. Please send ASAP.
Also, I will be sending the job assignment for CCS Trials and asking for names of workers to submit to CCS.
Thanks.
Julie
