The early morning fog did not appear and the sun greeted the 120 runners for the 7th Annual
Marshall Clark 4 Miler. Defending champ Lance Wolfsmith was not here but three-time champ
Hari Iyer was and it would seem to be his turn to win since he always wins this race in
the "odd" years. After a moment of silence, the gun sounded and the group of Iyer, Kevin
Liao (es-Evergreen), Luca Signore (Lynbrook) and Kian Banks (ex-Saratoga) took to the lead.
The first of the 2 downhill miles was covered in 5:10 with Iyer in the lead. Just before
two, Liao moved up to join Hari and the pack of four went through at 10:19 (5:09 split).
Just past 2 miles Liao and Iyer got a 2-3 second gap on Signore and Banks was beginning to
drop off the pace as well. During the long stretch on Cumberland, Liao moved out and
dropped Iyer. By three miles (15:40ish) Signore had taken over second place. "I thought
he might come back to me on the hill but he just maintained his distance," Signore said.
Liao was first on the track and was greeted by the sounds of the Saratoga Marching Band.
But both Liao and Signore got a little too close to the action and had to maneuver through
a couple of horn players (can we say Cal/Stanford game). It didn't change the order as Liao
broke the tape at 21:15 and Signore was 8 seconds back followed by Iyer and Banks. The only
Meet Record broken that day was by 69 year old Tim Rostege of WVJ&S that broke the 60+
record by a whopping 3 minutes!
The women's race did not have defending champ Alicia Follmar who had won the race the last five
years in a row. Karen Wai (Saratoga) kept the streak going for the Falcons by taking it out
at 6:25 and not seeing any women around her. "There was a really nice man who encouraged me
for the first two miles until I couldn't hear him," she said. Hitting two at 13:00 (6:35) she
knew that the downhills were over and that the work would begin. "I started to think - Let's
just finish this thing - and didn't know if anyone was near me or not." But by the time she hit
the track she had to know the win was hers. Like the men, she had to "float" around members of
the band, "and I'm in the Marching Band," she said. Karen wanted to thank the Saratoga and
Lynbrook teams for putting on this event each year and looks forward to future years in running.
