For one CCS track athlete the 2026 season just finished up at the U20 World Chmpaionships in Eugene, Oregon where Brady Tse (Harker) broke his own CCS record in the 400IH with a 50.97 mark in H6 where he took 2nd which advanced him to the semis where he ran a 51.44 time.

Urgent update on WVJC Track Demolition project

The track at West Valley College has officially been locked up, and the demolition is expected to begin in the coming weeks. We are running out of time to save this vital community space. There is a protest march scheduled for this Saturday, August 15, at 11:00 AM on the WVC campus. If you are interested in saving this track then share the information with your friends and neighbors and bring them all out. If you know anyone in the media, share the information and invite them as well. You can find all the protest details and sign the petition here. (summary is show up at the entrance to the track at 11 am 8/15). I also want to clear the air regarding the administration's narrative. Chancellor Davis has recently been using the West Valley Joggers & Striders name in his public responses to imply community dialogue. Here are the facts: Four club representatives met with him exactly once in April. Since then, we have not spoken with him, and our attempts to schedule a follow-up meeting have been unsuccessful. It is not accurate for him to say that he is working with the club or to imply that we in any way support this project. The administration is also claiming that its communication regarding this project has been open to the public. On the contrary, these demolition plans appear to have been intentionally hidden from non-coaching faculty, the general student body, and the community at large. If you are speaking with neighbors or the press, here are a few more critical facts:


The Measure W Deception: The 2018 bond measure authorized funding for a "track replacement." No reasonable voter interpreted that wording as the demolition, removal, or relocation of a 50-year-old community asset. The Chancellor is citing this line and saying that the voters did approve removing the current track.

The "New" Track is Not for Runners: The proposed replacement track they are offering is a rectangular 200m path with rounded corners. It is geometrically unsuitable for actual running.

Environmental & Health Risks: Tearing up a 50-year-old track to construct the largest building on campus should require a full Environmental Impact Report. However, the college managed to avoid the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process. The community should have legitimate health and safety concerns about what will be exposed when they tear up that half-century-old foundation and construct the new building.

Misplaced Bond Priorities: Measure W funds have so far been spent disproportionately on athletic complexes while academic facilities and general maintenance have been severely neglected. It is so imbalanced that the VP of Finance recently stated they will likely need to go back to the voters for another bond measure just to fund general facilities maintenance.

Financial Mismanagement: Financial ledgers and public state data reveal that the college is funneling community rental fees from all campuses facilities into exorbitant athletic travel budgets (including six-figure charter bus contracts). The college is also paying unprecedented amounts for community college coaching staff including six-figure overtime compensation.

There is still $400 million of Measure W funding left unspent. As taxpayers and voters, we must demand that the Board of Trustees halts this project immediately and conducts a full, independent review of how these funds are being allocated. The community should provide no additional bond funds in the future if this is not done. This fight is about more than just a place to run—it is about demanding fiscal accountability, transparency, and safety from our community college. Please take a moment to sign the petition, share it with your neighbors and friends, and join this Saturday 8/15 at 11:00 AM to make the voices of the community heard.

I always love it when I find out who stadiums are named for... this is from 1951 when the Sequoia Football coach planned to retire from coaching football but will continue to teach and coach, boxing? Also in 1951, original Lynbrook XC & Track Coach Verne Thorneburg ran for Cal Berkeley and finished 16th in this 6 mile XC race (33:25). That's your history lesson for the day.

Save WVJC Track! As many of you have heard, the West Valley College Track is scheduled to be removed starting this fall and replaced with a new PE/Wellness center. There is a plan to build a smaller track that might possibly be 200m in the area just east of the track next to the volleyball courts, but that project would not complete until around the end of 2028. This is disappointing news to most of us as the track is a vital part of our club's Saturday and weekday workouts. A number of people have asked about what can be done. A few club members have already been in contact and/or met with people including the WVC chancellor to get the information up to this point. Here is a brief summary up to this point:

1) Voters passed Measure W in 2018 which included a line for "Health and Wellness Center" without any detailed plans

2) Board Resolution No 23091204 in Sept 2023 approved "New Construction" without detailed plans and no mention about the removal of the track being an option.

3) Plan developed to upgrade the current PE buildings, but sometime in early/mid 2025 they realized that the scope of that work would end up costing $25-30M more than building a new building. At that point they scoped the track area and made the decision to go with that location in Aug 2025. This was reportedly discussed in public board meetings after that date.

4) They were not aware of any organized WVC or outside groups that used the track and had formal relationships with the college, so there was no one they knew to notify about this.

5) They would like the new track to be something that is of good quality and would like suggestions from the club about its design; they plan to have a follow-up meeting in the fall to discuss.

The summary from those of us who met with the Chancellor, is that the project is going forward and that anything we do at this point would at best stall it and end up costing them more money. However, we do think it's fair to say that this will affect how future requests put before the community voters will be considered. Since the meeting with the chancellor, a number of other community members have also voiced concerns about the removal of the track and the process and communication that has led up to this point. A couple of them would like to have their concerns voiced in the next board meeting. Unlike the meeting a few of us had with the Chancellor, concerns raised in the board meeting go on the record, which is wanted by at least a couple people. The next West Valley-Mission Board of Trustees meeting is on Tuesday, June 16th at 7:00PM, at the West Valley College Board Room; people can also join via Zoom (https://www.wvm.edu/calendars/events/#event-details/dae4419b-63cc-47a6-8940-558ff91d2757). People can submit a public comment beforehand (https://www.wvm.edu/board/public-comments.html), but that is not required to speak at the meeting.

California has witnessed history in the boys 4x100 during the 2026 Track season (by Jordan Cheng)

Going under Junipero Serra Rd at the Stanford XC Invitational to get to the "back side" of the course. Both runners and spectators would dash over the bridge (this was the 1969 University Division).

Before Scott Young was coaching XC at Santa Teresa HS there was Ken Cleveland and before Ken was Frank Bautista & David Gigliotti. I remember Frank for I was assistant coaching at Gunn HS when he was coaching at ST. Hard to believe it was 31 seasons ago when he passed. Great Coach - Great Guy.
