CCS All-Time Top 100 additions: 76 girls got on to the list from 2018, boys added 28 to the list in 2018 (updates can be made throughout the summer, just let me know). The lists have been updated for 2018.
Jason Gomez (Westmont): won a CCS XC title and a CCS Track title, the only athlete to do so this year. Add to that his State Title in the 800 and the 2nd fastest time ever run in the 800 for a CCS athlete (trailing only Rick Brown, Los Altos, 1970). Jason has until Aug 31st to still claim #1 All-Time if he can drop .12 seconds.
Jason Balkman (Lynbrook): held the Freshman All-Time CCS 1600 record since 1992 when he ran 4:21.31 (4:22.7 mile) at the Top 8 meet. This season saw not one but two break that 26 year old record with Colin Peattie, 4:16.83 (Bellarmine) and Kevin Andrews, 4:20.11 (Los Altos) both breaking the mark. For some perspective, Balkman ran 4:28 mile as an 8th grader (no info on his 7th grade time) while Peattie ran 4:40 (8th) and 4:49 (7th) and Andrews ran 4:48 (8th) and 5:09 (7th). The Sophomore record is 4:13.86 by Ken Bergkamp (Leigh) set in 1978.
1500/1600/mile?: which should it be? Even in 1990 (has it been that long...?) there was a debate about the "Short Mile" and "Short 2M". I vote for the 1500 but then we loose all of that history and our School Records will be re-written.
SCVAL Post-season Track Meeting: is Monday, May 21 at 6pm at FUHSD District Office, per League schedule. The meeting will be held in the PLC Room. If you have anything you would like to put on the agenda, please email Julie by May 20.
Blast From The Past: Before heading into CCS, this pic is from 8th grade track - Alex Scales, Jorge Estrella, Kevin Chacko, Zack Walker & Jake Davidson.
Changes Are Coming: for LynbrookSports.com - Starting with XC 2018 this site will focus on Meet Information and Meet Results that are sent to me to post. Running Club info, coaching openings, etc will no longer be posted (other sites are already doing this). I will also no longer "actively" look for current results - if they are sent to me, I will post. No point in having the same data in 3 or 4 places. LynbrookSports will instead be focusing on getting past results online, we must not lose the rich history that CCS has so I will be focussing this new found time on getting past pictures & results posted. LynbrookSports.com will still be here but in a smaller "footprint" for the present with a larger "footprint" from the past. Hank.
Golden Gate Bridge: First it was a shot of Moffett Field from 1933, now this gem is the Golden Gate Bridge in 1935.
Lynbrook Dual Meet Champs: The Frosh-Soph Boys and JV Girls both go 6-0 to finish the dual meet season at Champions. The Varsity Girls finish 3rd while the Varsity Boys take 4th.
Hayward Field - Old or New?: A note from Kenny Moore... I am Bill Bowerman's biographer. He coached me to two Olympic marathons. One of the great pleasures of my life is meeting with star struck Nike employees in the East Stands, by the Presidents' Box, on their heritage tours. There, I explain that Nike's corporate success began right there on the track in 1964, when Bowerman introduced jogging from New Zealand. Bill had made us better cushioned shoes for the road. Phil Knight and the new company found a market greedy for them, and never looked back. That was the beginning of Phil's staggering generosity to the University of Oregon. A crucial part of Nike's success was its competitive ethos, its Just Do It insistence that we are all athletes here, all subject to the training effect, no matter our ages. Of course, the most insistent reminder of that truth was Bill Boweman himself. Accordingly, Nike rightly tried to imbue the company with his spirit. Employees carry a list of moral practices. Number 11, supposedly paramount, is "Remember the Man." When I cast my eyes over the planned transformation of Hayward Field, all I can see is a perversely ignorant "remembering" of the man, the character and wishes of the man. Bill Bowerman would never expose fans to both heat and rains without proper protection. Bill Boweman would cringe at the height and shape of his honorary tower. Bill Bowerman would look to preserve the East Stands and President box. Bill Bowerman, that great problem solver, would urge us to wait, to reconsider, to rethink what we are about to do in his name. And I concur. Kenny Moore April 23, 2018.
Lynbrook Alum Varun Pemmaraju (2009): finishes this year's horrendous Boston Marathon in 2:48:51 for 500th place.
Moffett Field: Alot has changed since 1933, including Moffett Field, I'm sure it will one day be called Google Field.
Santa Cruz 4x800: The team of Anaya Ward-12[2:15.0], Ella Hedrick-12[2:18.0], Lila Roake-11 [2:25,3], Mari Friedman-12[2:09.4] break the CCS record that was held by Mitty (9:10.96, '05 McKayla Plank-12[2:16.5], Janelle English-11[2:19.8], Renisha Robinson-10[2:16.9], Christine Whalen-12[2:17.7]) with a 9:08.84 clocking to take 2nd at Arcadia.
Vincent Peng and Cosmo Cao (Lynbrook): TIE in the Color Dash.
Manny Mahon (Lynbrook): School Record in the 1600 (Mile actually, 4:12.0 '68) is celebrating 50 years this season.
Edward Choi (Lynbrook): had a great race (14.94) at the Stanford Invite this past weekend.
Chuck Rogers (Lynbrook): Chuck Rogers (Lynbrook AD, 1991-2005): Died this month of cancer. A football player and coach, Chuck hired me in 1994 as the Cross-Country coach for Lynbrook and also ran the 200 (33.8) for Team SCVAL in the Corporate Nationals in Maine in 2004, he would try anything.
Michael Davidson (Paly) & Bernie Ramos (Lynbrook): The two Viking Head Coaches before the dual (duel?) meet began. Lynbrook lost the VB but won the other 3 divisions - a good day for the Vikes.
School Record Time: Andy Shao has run within a second of Eric Surprenant's 10 year old School Record of 37.63 in the 300H - will the mark go down this year?
