================ ARTICLES & MISC =================
Meet the Crystal Springs "Drag". Now that XC racing in the Section is over, and once the rain subsides, this guy will be taken out for a spin to groom the Crystal course in preperation for the 2025 Cross-Country season. Speaking of the Crystal Course, here are updates to Individual Boys, Individual Girls, Team Boys, Team Girls, and 2nd Generation List.
Oh my, where to start... Not one but two athletes broke the one month old Crystal Springs Course Record that had previously stood for 50+ years. Eli Fitchen-Young (Santa Cruz) ran a 14:23.5 mark giving Santa Cruz bragging rights to owning the CCS best times on Crystal for both Boys & Girls (Kate Ratliff set the girls CCS record in 2015). Then Menlo boys took care of the Team Course Record that was set by Bellarmine in 2019. Their 75:43.0 mark was established by Landon Pretre, Will Hauser, Henry Hauser, Jared Saal & Oliver Olbekson. Kylie Hoornaert (Prospect) came away with her best time of her career and the top girls time for the day (17:48.4) and the St Francis ladies took the team time (92:51) good for #10 on the All-Time list. Another record was 6 boys teams made it on the All Time list breaking the previous best of 4 held by many "years". Eli sums up the meet best with this closing picture.
SCVAL Post-season meeting: Nov 18th, 6:00 pm at Saratoga HS. Send any agenda items, by Nov 16th, to Steph MacKenzie. Meeting handouts
Cason Mitchell (M-A) wins the PAL Finals. PAL Finals results.
Can anyone see what's wrong with the picture on the left? I really like this picture of Aydon. I believe this might be the first ever coaches picture of the entire SCVAL. SCVAL Divisional Finals results.
Landon Pretre on his way to a WBAL win and a sub-15 clocking, with his teammates showing their pack running strength. Evie Marheineke (Mitty) striding in for the WCAL win and missing the sub-18 dip by less than a second. If the St Francis Top 5 girls each improve by 12 seconds, they can take down the CR set by Carlmont in 2007.
Victors Lily Yang (Lynbrook) & Dominic McMahon (Santa Clara) win the VG & VB races at the Lynbrook Invite.
How many remember this race course? I very narrow start that goes onto a 4 ft wide dirt trail after 50 meters and having to run across the bridge. The year was 1979 and the place was Alum Rock Park.
Landon Pretre (Menlo) scores a new Baylands Course Record with his 14:57.9 time at WBAL #2. Old record was 15:11.4 in 2017 by Meika Beaudoin-Rousseau (Bellarmine).
Trey Caldwell (DeLaSalle) breaks Mitch Kingrey (San Carlos) Crystal Springs course record of 14:28 (1973) with a 14:27.1 clocking at the Serra Invite, that's a 52 year old record - WOW!.
759 runners compete on Crystal Springs course on Tuesday (Oct 8) on a beautiful (meaning NOT HOT) day. Aydon Stephanopoulos (Los Gatos) ran a 14:53.8 time getting his name added to the Crystal All-Time list. Pictures are here, or will be.
Baylands wildlife is unreal as we see this goose leading the race. Race results are here.
A throwback to 1978 at Crystal Springs #2... Jesse Colvin (Lynbrook) and John Hoch (M-A) kicking at the end.
Malcolm Slaney has used Bayesian modeling and data from XCStats (https://xcstats.com) to estimate the difficulty of more than 400 XC courses around California. These new estimates are now reflected (actually, not quite yet, I need more time) in the Lynbrook Course Converter page (https://lynbrooksports.prepcaltrack.com/ATHLETICS/XC/CONVERTR/converter2007.html). An explanation of the math and lots of graphs are online at GitHub (https://github.com/MalcolmSlaney/CrossCountryStats).
"Don't Judge Your Success By What Private Schools Do". - As what happens, I'm digging thru the archives and an article jumps out at me. It's April 1988 and even in 2024 these same issues arise now and then.
With the Knights Joust coming up this Saturday at Crystal Springs I thought a picture of the "God-Fathers of Crystal" would be appropriate. It's Oct 1976 and these coaches were instrumental in the development of XC in the Central Coast starting in 1955. They are Bill Daskoralis (Aragon), Tom Tuite (St Francis), Bob Rush (CSM), Plato Yanicks (M-A), Forest Jameson (Paly) and Loren Landsbery (Carlmont).
The Historic Mt Sac XC course is changing. Some of the hills are still there but the finish will be different and the distance will be longer - end of an era.
State Meet time Schedule & Section Qualifier counts.
A great group of volunteers spent their day out at Crystal Springs filling pot holes, cutting weeds and making sure the course is "race read". Thank you everyone.
Crystal Springs Schedule (Official, as of 08/29): The Crystal Springs Handbook. The Crystal Springs MEET DIRECTOR Handbook (thanks to Kirk Flatow).
Steps 4 Smiles was a 5K/10K race put on by the Bellarmine XC team in Vasona Park benefiting 2nd Harvest, they raised over $12K. Results & Video are here.
SCVAL Pre-season meeting: Aug 15th, 6:30 pm at Saratoga HS Team Room (by pool). Send any agenda items, by August 14th, to Paul Armstrong. Meeting handouts ARE HERE.
Every year the CCS At-Large times are computed, here are the spreadsheets that do the computations: Team At-Large / Individual At-Large / Course Conversion (ex. Pinto Lake)
Addtions to the All-Time CCS Top 100 list can be found here.
